Dominik Szoboszlai was Liverpool’s match-winner in their priceless 1-0 win at Inter Milan, but did he earn the Man of the Match award?Inter Milan 0-1 LiverpoolChampions League (6) | San SiroDecember 9, 2025Goals: Szoboszlai pen 88′Alisson – 7 (out of 10)Untroubled during the first half, but sprang into life seconds before half-time, getting down low to deny Lautaro Martinez.Showed some typically immaculate handling late on from a corner, easing the pressure on the defence.Joe Gomez – 6Once again, Gomez did a dependable job at right-back, even if his technical quality was occasionally lacking in the final third.Defensively he did well up against Federico Dimarco, prior to being replaced midway through the second half.Didn’t actually win any of his three ground duels, though.Ibrahima Konate – 7The under-fire Konate was much improved, not to mention harshly having a header disallowed. He looked more focused than he has throughout this season, putting his physicality to good use, and only Van Dijk (five) made more clearances for Liverpool than his tally of four.Virgil van Dijk – 8Van Dijk needed to lead by example in the San Siro and he did just that, hardly putting a foot wrong all night.Played a couple of inch-perfect long passes reminiscent of an effortless Rory McIlroy five iron, and made a vital block to thwart Martinez.Andy Robertson – 7Robertson’s experience shone through at a tough ground, with the Scot solid defensively rather than expansive going forward. On the end of a nasty tackle from Martinez, but recovered well, and whipped an enticing cross into the area that almost led to Alessandro Bastoni slicing into his own net.Ryan Gravenberch – 7Gravenberch is such an aesthetically pleasing player to watch and he oozed class at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield. The Dutchman produced a good strike from distance to force Yann Sommer into a save, and generally impressed in and out of possession.Dominik Szoboszlai – 8 (Man of the Match)Szoboszlai yet again stood out and then won it in the dying minutes. He dispatched a nerveless penalty to secure a precious win for Arne Slot, highlighting his leadership at such a big moment.Never stopped running for the team.Curtis Jones – 7Jones was Liverpool’s best player in the first half, with one weaving run and shot testing Sommer, and lots of intent in possession.Booked in the second half after a lunging tackle, and while his influence waned he should be pleased with his efforts.Deserves to be playing more regularly.Alexis Mac Allister – 7Mac Allister often took up a role at the top of the midfield diamond, and was neat and tidy while also working hard.He was more involved and less culpable than he has been of late, perhaps enjoying being given a little more freedom.Still not perfect, but improved.Hugo Ekitike – 6Ekitike did very little until the half-hour, with a dangerous run and shot winning a corner. He was quiet overall, barring a stinging long-range effort that was more hopeful than anything, and he couldn’t link effectively with Alexander Isak.Alexander Isak – 5It’s incredible just how quiet Isak is, considering the world-class footballer he is at his best.Barring one shot wide soon after half-time it was another hard watch, with Liverpool’s record signing touching the ball just once in Inter’s penalty area.He didn’t receive great service, in fairness, but he is a shadow of his Newcastle self. SubstitutesConor Bradley (on for Gomez, 67′) – 7Denied by Sommer from a tight angle and added more attacking thrust than Gomez.Florian Wirtz (on for Isak, 67′) – 7Won the penalty that Szoboszlai scored, and was effective in tight areas.Subs not used: Mamardashvili, Woodman, Lucky, Kerkez, Nyoni, Ngumoha Arne Slot – 8After all the drama in the last few days, Slot will have been delighted to see actual football return. His decision to play a 4-4-2 diamond paid off, with Liverpool the better team throughout, even if there was a lack of creativity.Considering the injuries – and lack of Mohamed Salah – Slot should be happy with what is a massive result for both him and Liverpool.Still lots of improving to do, but a big step in the right direction.
