In a recent conversation, the President of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy revealed that the company is focusing on attracting older audiences to Disney+ with adult content, some of which will be sourced from Hulu. This comes after The Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Fox, which brought more raunchy content, like The Simpsons and Family Guy, under the Mouse’s umbrella. For a company with a 100-year reputation for family-friendly content, changing the public perception of its content is a monumental task…and Disney executives are aware that it may be an impossible one. Instead, the company is focused on creating original shows for Hulu that will entice adult audiences to purchase a Disney+ subscription.Credit: Anthony Quintano, FlickrEarlier this month, Eric Schrier, President of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy, spoke at the Content London summit about the company’s future content strategy. Schrier, who spent two decades as an executive at FX (owned by Disney after the 20th Century Fox merger), is no stranger to adult-focused entertainment.Schrier admitted that, at first, Disney wanted to change the “perception” of Disney+ as a family-focused streaming service. When that task proved far too complex, the Mouse decided to use its other assets (like Hulu) to blend adult-oriented content into its offerings.Credit: 20th Century Fox“Disney is one of the most well-known brands in the world, and so changing and going full on FX-HBO was the instinct,” Schrier said. “And we made some very good shows I’m very proud of. But as we got more mature and we looked at, ‘Okay, what’s our next phase? We said, ‘Let’s be a little bit more complimentary. Let’s be entertaining. We’ll still do edgy things.’”Under CEO Bob Iger, Disney+ has shifted from a quantity-focused content model to a quality-based one, aiming to extract as much financial value from a smaller content pool. Walt Disney Animation Studios has confirmed it is no longer creating limited series for the streaming platform; the company canceled an in-development hand-drawn show inspired by The Princess and the Frog (2009).Credit: DisneyBecause Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm create the family-friendly films and series that fans know and love, Schrier said the Hulu brand can focus on drawing adult audiences.“We’ve now been able to integrate the Hulu brand as the brand for all of our original content globally,” Schrier continued. “We’re not really developing shows for kids and family — that’s really done by global brands and IP. So we’re really looking to do Hulu Originals across the world and showing people that there’s content for adults on Disney+.”Eric Schrier (President, Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy) on their current content strategy.“So we’re really looking to do Hulu Originals across the world and showing people that there’s content for adults on Disney+.”(https://hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/disney-tv-president-eric-schrier-content-london-rivals-talk-1236440930/)Eric Schrier (President, Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy) on their current content strategy. “So we’re really looking to do Hulu Originals across the world and showing people that there’s content for adults on Disney+.”… pic.twitter.com/dvioJJg7Ds— Boardwalk Times (@BoardwalkTimes) December 3, 2025Despite The Walt Disney Company’s focus on making Disney+ profitable through increased prices, budget cuts, and an ad-tier-based subscription model, Schrier said he’s still encouraging creatives to take risks – especially with adult-oriented content.Credit: 20th Century Studios / Disney“I really try to give my creative leaders room to experiment and take risks, and failure is okay,” he said. “That’s going to happen in the creative business, and you need to be able to take risk, and you need to be able to build risk in the system. That model and that philosophy has worked really well and has shown that, actually, from a business standpoint, our return on investment and our failure rate is actually smaller because we’re willing to take risks.”Is there enough adult-focused content on Disney+ right now?
