UP: Woman constable, who claimed SHO shot himself, held for his murder in Jalaun

Written by Manish SahuLucknow | December 8, 2025 05:20 AM IST 2 min readA 27-year-old woman police constable was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing a Station House Officer (SHO) in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh.The body of 46-year-old Arun Kumar Rai, the SHO of Kuthaund police station, was found at his official residence on Friday night with a gunshot wound to his head.According to Jalaun Superintendent of Police Durgesh Kumar Singh, constable Meenakshi Sharma had first informed the police about Rai’s death, claiming the SHO had allegedly shot himself with his service weapon.However, police said, suspicion about her involvement grew when CCTV footage showed her coming out of the SHO’s residence just after the incident on Friday night.Also, SHO’s wife had accused Meenakshi Sharma of killing him.Sharma is currently posted with Dial 112 in Jalaun.“The postmortem report revealed that the bullet had entered from the right side of the SHO’s head and exited from the left… Based on the evidence gathered so far, we have arrested the woman constable. She was the one who first informed the police about the incident,” Jalaun Superintendent of Police Durgesh Kumar Singh said, adding that scientific evidence is being collected, and the next steps would be taken accordingly.Sources in the police said that the woman constable was arrested “primarily because she was present at the spot at the time of the incident”.Story continues below this ad“Around 9 pm on Friday, the woman constable was seen running out of the SHO’s residence, shouting that he had shot himself. Moments earlier, police personnel at the Kuthaund station had heard the sound of a gunshot. When they rushed to the SHO’s quarters located inside the police station premises, they found the SHO lying on the floor with blood oozing from his head. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” said a police officer, citing the CCTV footage.Rai, who had been promoted to the post of inspector from constable in August this year, is survived by his wife and a son.
