A bizarre ride malfunction impacted Disneyland Resort’s version of Pirates of the Caribbean on Sunday, sending guests through an eerie, sound-filled journey with mostly motionless audio-animatronics. Several Disney Park guests shared their unusual experience in photos and videos on social media. The Pirates of the Caribbean RideDisneyland Park’s New Orleans Square is home to the original version of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which debuted in 1967. The attraction was so popular that Walt Disney Imagineers created versions for Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris Resort, and Tokyo Disneyland at Tokyo Disney Resort. In the early 2000s, it inspired the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, which was so successful that Imagineers eventually retrofitted Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) animatronics into several ride scenes.Credit: DisneyBeyond the Jack Sparrow animatronics, the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction has undergone several changes over the years. Like any changes at the Disney parks, these updates have been highly controversial. In the late 2010s, Walt Disney Imagineers replaced a brides-for-auction scene with a stolen goods auction scene, depicting independent female pirates. Some Disney Parks fans were happy to see a more inclusive version of Pirates of the Caribbean, while others slammed the sanitized depiction of gritty piracy.Still, other Disney Park guests want the company to change Pirates of the Caribbean even more. In 2023, a TikToker went viral after calling the boat ride’s male animatronics “a little bit rapey.” Many social media users slammed the guest for saying she felt uncomfortable on the attraction, but several women echoed her experience.“It feels like we’re the entertainment for them and I do not like it,” one commenter wrote.Credit: Disney“I always felt violated on this ride,” said another.Despite the controversies, Pirates of the Caribbean continues to operate at Disney parks around the world. Some joked that Disney cast members forgot to greet the mischievous ghost that purportedly haunts the New Orleans Square attraction.“Looks like someone didn’t say good morning or good night to George,” u/MeasurementNarrow182 wrote.Others offered a more realistic explanation. According to several Disneyland Resort guests, a power outage in Anaheim shut down several rides at Disney California Adventure Park on Sunday. Many Disney Parks fans theorized that the electrical issue had impacted Pirates of the Caribbean, too.Credit: Inside the Magic“In California Adventure right now and half the park is shut down,” said u/AstralDragon1979. “Someone in my party overheard others saying that there was some sort of electrical/power outage. Seems like complete speculation but it fits the observation that the park is cycling through attractions, keeping a significant portion offline to prevent a brownout or something.”“Massive power spike in Anaheim,” u/ParticularGood8230 echoed. “Affected parts of the surrounding areas and DCA as well.”One of the guests who experienced this unusual version of Pirates of the Caribbean said that Disney cast members stopped loading the ride vehicles as soon as they discovered something was amiss.Credit: Ken Lund, Flickr“They werent loading people on when we were exiting so at least they became privy to it,” u/Illustrious-Bar4100 wrote. It’s unclear how long it took for Disneyland Resort to reset the Pirates of the Caribbean audio-animatronics and return the ride to standard operations. However, at the time of this article’s publication, the New Orleans Square attraction had reopened and was operating normally. Which Disney park has the best Pirates of the Caribbean ride?
