The minimum temperature in many districts of south interior Karnataka, including Hassan, Mandya, Mysuru, and Chamarajanagar, dropped below 15°C, with residents waking up to an unusually cold morning on December 9.Hassan was the coldest at 13.4°C while Mandya recorded 13.5°C. The minimum temperature at Chamarajanagar was marginally higher at 14.6°C, according to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).The minimum temperature for the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on December 9 was 14.4°C for Mysuru as per KSNDMC records. This is also 2.8°C lower than the minimum of 17.2°C recorded on December 8. However, the data from Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) varied compared to the temperature recorded by KSNDMC across different centres. The minimum temperature in Hassan, according to IMD, was 10.6°C while it was 15.4°C for Mysuru on December 9.It is one of the lowest for the winter season recorded so far this year and made people shiver while streets appeared deserted for a longer duration. The early morning walkers were relatively fewer on roads and at parks; those braving the chilly weather were fully covered in warm clothing such as woollen fur caps and hoodies for protection against the biting cold. In Mysuru city, the usual early-morning walkers at Kukkarahalli Lake, Manasagangotri campus, and Chamundi foothills moved at a brisker pace in a bid to beat the cold while light fog hovered in open stretches. The drop in temperature on December 9 is a continuation of the chilly conditions that Mysuru and surrounding regions have been experiencing for the last few days, especially during the early part of the day and again at night. Residents of Mysuru and the rural hinterland have been observing a noticeable chill before sunrise for the last few days but it dipped to a new low on December 9. But the sun broke out by 9 a.m. and there was searing heat by noon. But the temperature dropped again late in the evening.Officials noted that while variations between districts are normal, the overall pattern points to a steady fall in temperature across districts.Published - December 09, 2025 06:20 pm IST
