I really believe if you love someone, let them sleep. Jo tumhe uthata hai, wo sabse bada dushman ho sakta hai (the one who wakes you up could be your biggest enemy)…main toh kehta hoon holiday par jaate jaate neend puri karo nahi toh pura din barbaad ho jaata hai…(I advise you to complete your sleep before you head for a holiday as it spoils the day ahead),” he said in a chat with Pinkvilla during a promotional event for his latest film Thamma. He added, “Waise meri neend puri nahi hoti (But I don’t end up completing my sleep…I don’t sleep for more than six hours. But chutti wale din agar mujhe koi uthade…Thamma…2 daant baahar aate hai mere…(laughs) (Nobody dares to wake me up on my day off). Do you sleep enough? (Photo: Pexels)Many people connect with the idea of catching up on restful sleep during vacations or weekends. This thought feels comforting, especially for those who struggle to get more than six hours on regular days. “Sleeping longer on days off can feel good because the body is recovering from the sleep lost during the week. Extra rest relaxes the nervous system, lowers stress hormones, and boosts mood,” said Dr Prashant Makhija, consultant neurologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central. However, relying on weekend catch-up sleep isn’t ideal. The body follows a fixed internal clock. “When you sleep late or wake up late only on weekends, this clock can become confused, making Monday mornings more challenging. Occasionally sleeping longer is fine, but making it a habit can cause your weekday sleep to become even more irregular,” said Dr Makhija.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pinkvilla (@pinkvilla)  If someone struggles to sleep beyond six hours, is that a concern? It depends, said Dr Makhija. “Some people naturally need slightly less sleep and feel refreshed after six hours. For them, this amount may be sufficient. But if six hours leaves you tired, irritable, craving caffeine, or unable to focus, your body is indicating that it needs more rest,” said Dr Makhija. Also Read | Tejasswi Prakash on being ‘borderline insomniac’, struggling to sleep: ‘So many nights in a week that I don’t’Should someone stick to a fixed sleep schedule even on vacation?A strict schedule isn’t always necessary during holidays, but keeping a reasonable routine helps the body stay balanced. “Going to bed a little later is fine as long as the difference is not extreme. The key is consistency, waking up and sleeping within a similar time frame to keep the internal clock steady. If you use vacations to catch up on sleep, that’s beneficial, but try to avoid swinging between very little sleep and very long sleep each week,” said Dr Makhija.DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to.
