Xabi Alonso: Liverpool job “for sure” an option in the future

Wait 5 sec.

Xabi Alonso has admitted that he would “for sure” consider returning to Liverpool at a future point in his career.Alonso has been the manager of Real Madrid for six months, but he is already under pressure amid discontent among some players, Vinicius Jr in particular. In fact, Marca suggest that he will be sacked if Madrid lose to Man City at home on Wednesday. It is a crazy scenario given he has won 19 of his 27 matches in charge. The situation has, though, opened up rumours of a potential move to Liverpool should he leave Madrid and Arne Slot lose his job.Asked if he would consider going back to England, Alonso said: “Well for sure.“There’s this bond with the English clubs, for sure with my former club, but at the moment this is my place. This is where I want to be.“In the future, you never know what could happen.”Alonso played 210 times for the Reds across five campaigns and was key to winning the 2005 Champions League, 2006 FA Cup and bringing guile to Rafa Benitez’s midfield, which featured Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano too.The Spaniard was also quizzed on Mo Salah‘s recent comments, with a comparison made between the Egyptian and Vinicius Jr who has reportedly refused to sign a new contract while his relationship with Alonso remains strained.Alonso commented: “This decision has been made in Liverpool. Of course, I’m sure we are missing many details of what’s going on and in no way I have to say anything about it.”  While Salah’s relationship with Slot may have broken down, Alisson has said the squad are still backing the manager.“Of course, yeah we are,” Alisson replied when asked if the players are still behind Slot.“The Premier League last season, before Arne came in everyone talks about the huge challenge of being the successor for Jurgen Klopp.“Everyone takes for granted last season, it should not be taken for granted. That should be enough, but we believe in his knowledge, his style of playing and turning around this situation.“That’s the situation with the club as well, they trust him.“It’s not only his responsibility, as a player I share the responsibility to turn this around. We are responsible. We take this responsibility, we are the ones that can change everything.“We are trying, doesn’t make it easier, but we are trying to do that. We have the desire to change.“The manager has the desire as well and to be back on the winning track and playing the same good football we were playing last season.”In addition, journalist David Ornstein has reported that the club “are 100 percent behind” the coach and “backing him to improve the form and continue the success we saw last season, wholeheartedly for the time being.”So it sounds like Slot is going to be around for some time yet as Liverpool boss. However, if the Reds were to part ways with the Dutchman, Alonso would surely be among the candidates they would approach.
