Kannur district will observe a dry day from 6 a.m. on December 9 until the close of polling on December 11, and again on December 13 when votes are counted, following orders issued by District Collector Arun K. Vijayan, who also serves as the District Election Officer.The restriction aims to ensure the smooth conduct of the local body elections scheduled for December 11. Liquor outlets, hotels, restaurants, clubs, and all establishments selling or serving alcohol must remain closed during the notified period. The sale, service, and distribution of alcohol in public or private spaces within the polling area are prohibited.The Collector has also requested authorities in neighbouring Kodagu district, the Mahe region, and police station limits bordering Kannur to enforce a similar restriction for 48 hours ahead of 6 p.m. on December 11 to prevent the inflow of liquor.Private storage of liquor is banned during the dry day period, and checks will be carried out to prevent any unlicensed storage or sale.Published - December 08, 2025 07:57 pm IST
