Citing federalism and rights of states, Sibal opposes simultaneous elections

Among those who attended the meeting were BJP MPs Sambit Patra, Anurag Thakur, Congress members Manish Tewari, Sukdhdeo Bhagat, and SP member Dharmendra Yadav.Sibal was said to have opposed the idea to hold simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and state Assemblies on the ground that it would curtail the rights of state governments. In his view, the Bills would not stand the Constitutional test, and be against its principles.Parliamentary committee proceedings are privileged and details of exchanges between members during meetings are not made public.Speaking after the meeting, Chaudhary told reporters that Sibal “clarified various queries of the members about the One Nation One Election Bills”. “We had a very good, healthy, and constructive discussion about this,” he said, adding that the next meeting has been scheduled on December 17.“It is about One Nation One Election, so we have to listen to all the stakeholders, as it is a very big election reform… Every member is working in the interest of the nation,” Chaudhary said.The two Bills were introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in December 2024 and referred to the House panel. The Bills provide for synchronising the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections by curtailing the terms of state Assemblies that are elected after a particular Lok Sabha to end with the term of that Lok Sabha.
