The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) has secured its first Inter Guiana Games (IGG) Chess title, with President Anand Ragunauth immediately crediting the Government of Guyana for the strategic support that paved the way for the historic victory.Speaking after the tournament, Ragunauth was effusive in his praise for the athletes but made a point of acknowledging the government and its agencies, whose backing he described as crucial.“The Guyana Chess Federation was pleased to have chess included as one of the events at the IGG 2025,” Ragunauth said. “We were happy to achieve our goals as this was the first time we were able to win the title.”Ragunauth singled out the Government of Guyana, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), and the National Sports Commission (NSC), underscoring their “strategic roles” in both hosting the Games and providing the necessary support for the federation to deliver the championship.The victory marks a significant milestone for the GCF, which is actively investing in expanding the sport nationally. They are already planning to defend their crown next year.“We look forward to retaining this title next year in Suriname,” the President added.Guyana finished first in the overall Chess standings, with Suriname placing second and French Guiana third.The Open tournament saw Guyana claim the Gold medal, spearheaded by strong performances from Kyle Couchman, CM Sachin Pitamber, Micaiah Enoe, and Alexander Zhang.In the Girls’ segment, Guyana took home the silver medals behind winners Suriname.
