The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the first phone in the now-iconic foldable lineup to support one of my favorite modern display features: the lock screen wallpaper on the Always On Display. But does it matter? I don't think so. Not this time. It's a peculiar case because of how Samsung implemented it on the Flip 7 in particular. And in the end, I don't think that Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 owners should worry about missing out.Why I think this addition feels pointlessI think I can answer this with one question for Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Flip 6 users. How often and for how long do you keep your Flip locked and unfolded? If I were to guess, I'd say not that often, if ever. I find it hard to believe that many Galaxy Z Flip owners treat their foldable phones like slab-type phones when they're not in use.Nevertheless, that's kind of what Samsung implies with the Galaxy Z Flip 7. And the reason is simple: The brand-new addition, i.e., the lock screen AOD wallpaper, is supported only on the foldable screen. It doesn't work with the Flip 7's cover display. So, unless you keep your Flip unfolded and locked all the time, and I'm guessing most people don't, there's really no point in having this feature. And if you are a Galaxy Z Flip 5 or Z Flip 6 owner, I don't think you're missing out.Granted, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is actually a stellar phone and a fantastic upgrade option, the most substantial since the Flip 5 debuted in 2023. There are plenty of reasons to want one, but if you ask me, that lock screen AOD wallpaper is not it.As for the cover screen experience, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Z Flip 6, and Z Flip 7 users alike have access to the same “tap to show for 5 seconds” Always On Wallpaper.
