Mauro Icardi is the man who could win Roma the Italian title at the expense of his old side – but Premier League clubs won’t touch him. That is the opinion of European football expert Andy Brassell, who believes a return to Serie A is on the cards for the Galatasaray star.Icardi has found himself on the bench more often than not this seasonGettyIcardi became one of the biggest names in Turkish football upon his arrival in 2022, before he made the move permanent a year later. However, the 32-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a Europa League win over Tottenham Hotspur in November 2024.Victor Osimhen’s decision to turn last season’s loan from Napoli into a permanent stay has also seen Icardi pushed down the pecking order. The latter has made just five starts in the Turkish Super Lig this campaign, and is without a goal across six Champions League games.Icardi set to leave Galatasaray next monthBrassell exclusively told talkSPORT.com: “He’s one of those guys who is difficult to have around when he’s not in the team. “And the fact that he feels that the club are thinking twice about whether they would extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season. It seemed a shoo-in [that he would extend] at one point.“But you’re thinking, if he can’t get in the XI, are you really going to want to pay him £10 million a year tax-free plus?“I think probably no, really. They’ve got better use of the resources elsewhere.“They have been asking in the Turkish media in recent days, is there a possibility of the club and player finding a landing spot for him in winter?”Where next for Icardi? The Argentine is a long-standing Premier League target, with Arsenal rejecting the chance to sign him from Paris Saint-Germain in 2022.As a youngster, Icardi came close to joining Liverpool before Brendan Rodgers took a gamble on Mario Balotelli. The former Inter Milan captain even confirmed publicly that Manchester United had made a concrete move to sign him.Next month, Icardi could represent a market opportunity for clubs struggling for goals towards the bottom of the Premier League.Yet Brassell believes a return to Italy seems more likely, saying the striker could be the man to deliver Roma the league title.McTominay and Napoli could be dealt an unlikely challenger to their title defenceAFPScott McTominay inspired Napoli to glory in May, en route to winning the Serie A MVP Award in his first year in Italy.Antonio Conte’s men are currently joint top of the table in their defence of the Scudetto this year with AC Milan.Icardi’s old club, Inter, sit one point adrift in third, ahead of Roma, who would be banking on a Luis Suarez-esque impact from him.Suarez memorably responded to being released by Barcelona by joining Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid, and ultimately scoring 21 league goals to help his new side win the 2020/21 LaLiga title.Suarez played a key role in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga title win in 2021AFP OR LICENSORSPremier League clubs wouldn’t touch himOn Icardi’s next move, Brassell added: “Now, even given his age and given his quite lurid reputation, of course, he split from Wanda Nara last year, as he’s been at pains to show us with his new partner on social media for the last several months.“The fact is, he’s been super professional at Galatasaray. He’s been a leader, he’s been good with young players, he’s connected with the supporters, he makes a great effort, and his goal-scoring prowess is absolutely undimmed.“He is an unbelievable finisher. The sort of guy you would get to score your goals if you really needed it in the winter transfer window.Icardi’s 10-year marriage to Wanda Nara caused several controversies at InterGetty“A lot of Premier League clubs who should be having a dart at Icardi wouldn’t touch him, probably because of his reputation, probably because [Lionel] Messi didn’t want him anywhere near the Argentina team, and that was part of the reason his international career ended ages ago. “Partly because of the fact that he’s 32 and he’s just come off at ACL.“Given the physicality of the Premier League, I can completely understand that.“[Icardi] playing up front on his own in the Premier League does seem a difficult sell. I think Serie A is definitely a possibility.” Icardi remains popular at Galatasaray but could reignite his career back in ItalyGettyHe could help Roma win Serie A“Say I was Roma, a team that doesn’t let in goals, that has the best defensive record in the league, but can’t find anyone to put it in the back of the net, would I be making an offer for him for six months in January? Absolutely!” Brassell continued to talkSPORT.“Serie A is so open this season. I think if you’re Roma, he’s the guy who could win you the league. “It may seem a bit far-fetched, but in terms of the fact that they don’t concede leads and they don’t have someone who’s absolutely clinical, that could make the difference for them.“You’re not looking at someone who’s a long-term solution. He’s not going to be with you for four or five years or whatever. “If you think someone a little bit like ‘revenge Luis Suarez’ when he left Barcelona, and he went and won the league for Atletico, if I were Icardi, that would massively appeal to me.”
