From allegations of assault to intimidation, the second day of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal was mired by controversies and political finger-pointing.A Booth Level Agent (BLA) of the BJP alleged that he was assaulted by ruling TMC workers at Kalitala panchayat in Hingalganj Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday while he was returning with the Booth Level Officer after distributing enumeration forms.“I was stopped on the side of the road. They kicked me and punched me in my chest and stomach. Residents of the area rescued me,” BJP’s BLA Ranjit Mallick said.While the local TMC MLA Debes Mondal said he was not aware of any such incident, the BJP accused the ruling party of trying to disrupt the SIR exercise in the state by intimidating the BLOs.In Khanakul in Hooghly district, the BJP alleged that local TMC leaders and workers were accompanying the BLO carrying party flags during the distribution of enumeration forms.While BLO Sariful Molla Haque admitted that TMC office-bearer Abbas Ali accompanied him, the latter denied the allegations of any pressure being put on the BLO.“We did not intimidate. This is a completely false allegation. However, I admit that party workers should not have carried the party flag. It will not happen next time,” Ali, who is the president of TMC’s Arambagh minority cell, said.Story continues below this adAllegations have also been levelled against BJP MLA Subrata Maitra accompanying a local BLO during the survey in Berhampur. “No one has any problem. In fact, the TMC is creating fear and intimidation among people. But there is no reason for panic. The TMC is trying to spread unrest and create confusion among people. We will always be with the BLOs so that people do not face any problem,” the BJP MLA defended his action.The BJP, meanwhile, said that it will complain to the Election Commission over TMC leaders accompanying BLOs in Malda district.“The EC should take stern action against the BLOs who are sitting at the TMC leaders’ house and distributing forms. The BLOs are being pressured by the TMC’s BLAs,” senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, adding he would raise the matter with the EC and demand strict action.Meanwhile, it has been alleged that a BLO in Bhagwangola Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district was distributing enumeration forms to voters from the residence of a local TMC leader.Story continues below this adAs per the EC guidelines, BLOs are required to carry out voter-related work — such as form distribution and correction — within their assigned booth areas or at officially approved venues.In Durgapur, it has been alleged that BLO Sushma Bhowmick was distributing enumeration forms at a bus stand. “How will we know that the BLO will sit at the bus stand and distribute forms. We know that they will be doing door-to-door visits,” said a resident of the area.In Kolkata’s Jodhpur Park, a BLO was accused of distributing forms from a tea stall. BLO Akash Das has, however, refuted the charge. “After I visited the houses today, a group of people came and collected the forms from the tea stall,” Das claimed.Till 5 pm on Wednesday, 84 lakh enumeration forms were distributed, the EC said.
