The victim was forced to sell his properties including houses in the UK and also take loans to continue paying the suspects.A complainant application in this regard was submitted to the Pune city police by an IT professional who works for a talent acquisition company and has returned from the UK a few years ago. One of the victims’s daughter is suffering from a neurological disorder while the other suffers from an autoimmune ailment. In 2018, the complainant’s wife met a man in a meeting of a bhajani mandal — a group coming together for devotional songs.When this man came to know about the complainant’s daughter, he introduced the complainant’s wife to a couple. The woman claimed that the spirit of godman enters her body and she can cure all ailments the complainant’s daughters were suffering from. The three suspects then asked for all the information about sources of income of the complainant, his financials and properties his family owned, the complaint stated.Soon after, the three suspects started taking money from the complainant on the pretext of performing ‘healing rituals through the spirits of the godman. Soon after, the suspects began claiming that various properties of the complainant including his houses in the United Kingdom and Pune and agricultural land at their native village had faults and were causing the family their problems. The suspects convinced the victim to sell his properties and transfer the proceeds to them, claiming that the money from the sale could also bring misfortune. They also convinced him to take loans by mortgaging jewelry and relatives’ houses to continue paying them.Even after repeated harassment and extortion claiming supernatural powers, as the ailments of the victim’s daughters remained uncured, the family finally realised that they had been cheated.
