Alexis Mac Allister insisted Liverpool “were better and deserved to win” after his header clinched a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. But speaking to Amazon Prime Sport after the match, the midfielder admitted he and his teammates won’t get carried away following their experience of the Champions League last season. That saw Liverpool top the table at the end of the league phase only to exit at the round of 16 to Paris Saint-Germain.“It was a good game against a really good team,” Mac Allister explained.“Important win but we know that it doesn’t mean anything, because we have the experience of last season where we finished first and after we were out quite early.“So we need to keep on going. It’s important to build confidence, so it’s a good day.”Mac Allister’s goal came as a relief after over an hour of Liverpool being thwarted again by the inspired Thibaut Courtois.Asked if it felt like it may be another one of those nights – like the 2022 Champions League final – when Courtois could not be beaten, he said: “It looked like it, to be honest!“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, we all know. He had a few saves.“Again, I think he’s a really good keeper, but today I think we were better and we deserved to win.”A header in the second half was Mac Allister’s first goal for Liverpool since April and came almost a year after he opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield last season.Having produced a promising display in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday night, he reflected on what is proving to be a long-awaited return to form.“I always try to think about the team, not about me,” Mac Allister explained.“It’s true that maybe it wasn’t the beginning that I wanted, it was a little bit hard for me.“But now I’m getting in the rhythm.“I just wanted to play some games in a row, so I’m happy that I had the possibility to play against Villa, against [Real] today. So I’m really happy with it.”
