As Anfield celebrated its second win and clean sheet in a row, the doom and gloom of the last month lifted to fervent celebrations, but Arne Slot will know the next challenge ahead. It feels good, doesn’t it?Anfield was alive against Real Madrid, united in its desire for blood and to show that entitlement gets you nowhere against a team and fanbase at perfect harmony. If we turn back the clock only one week, we are, rightly, questioning Slot’s team selection as the Reds lose for the sixth time in seven games, with a potentially season-defining three games ahead. The ebbs and flows in football can be dramatic, out for the count one minute and a season rekindled the next, but that is sport in a nutshell – the emotional rollercoaster doesn’t have to make sense. But the hopeful onlookers itching to see Real Madrid roll Liverpool over at Anfield were left disappointed as Slot reverted to a trusted formula and Anfield ignited. Heading“I think just after we scored, I think Florian was maybe down on the ground, and the lads were looking around saying ‘This is where you want to play, these are the games you want to be a part of’,” Andy Robertson said after Liverpool’s 1-0 win.Good enough for a billboard, that! And if we look at it from the other side, Thibaut Courtois, who kept the scoreline modest, said: “It’s a very difficult stadium where you can lose, you have to show your face, play better, but these are matches that are decided by details.”It was an atmosphere tinged with multiple emotions at once, and it’s no secret Trent Alexander-Arnold was among them, which made Xabi Alonso’s decision to introduce him feel peculiar. Anfield flexed its vocal chords from the off, Real Madrid sprayed balls wayward, and even having the referee blocking passing lanes and shepherding our players off the ball did little to help them. And perhaps the biggest sign that you’re in for a good night is when the Main Stand is involved, and I can personally attest it was, from the upper stand anyway. There were few indications that Anfield would revert to a tense, nervy atmosphere, instead it remained in harmony with the players on the pitch, who were front-footed and ready for every battle. It was a timely reminder of the power Anfield continues to hold over our own team and the opposition, not that it comes as any surprise! In the early months of Slot’s tenure, there was an acknowledgement that his controlled style was not conducive to igniting Anfield, but we have long proven we can be our own conductor. There were various points of ignition against Real Madrid, as there was against Aston Villa, and now the feeling needs to stay with the squad for one final test before the last international break of 2025. Continuing the momentumAfter starting the season with seven successive victories, Liverpool then went on to win only one of their next seven. It was a whiplash of emotion, even if we knew performances did not always warrant the end result, and it led you to go down a rabbit hole of if this season could amount to anything. It was not without reason as Slot even told Ziggo Sport after Tuesday’s win that “losing so often was scandalous” with his side “far from our level.”Liverpool are still in the midst of turning the corner, they are not in the clear just yet, but supporters can be buoyed by Slot’s acceptance to revert to his winning formula. That means deploying Dominik Szoboszlai as the No. 10 and not shoehorning him at right-back, starting Andy Robertson and re-establishing the connection with Virgil van Dijk, and relying on his title-winning midfield unit. There has been too much change all at once for Liverpool and it was of little surprise that it looked like a team of strangers when you had a head coach changing the personnel and system countless times during a match. The last two wins, though, have put Liverpool back on an even keel and another against Man City would change the landscape again.Let’s not forget we’re still only 10 games in the Premier League season with the defining months still very much ahead of us. No trophies are awarded in November, sorry Arsenal.Man City may not be the formidable side they once were, but Sunday’s match feels like an opportunity beckoning to be taken before the festive madness kicks in and it becomes a war of attrition. The challenge for Slot is to stick with the formula that took Liverpool to Premier League glory and allow his new signings the time to adapt, the old guard know what it takes. The spotlight is harsh on Slot, it comes with the territory, but he witnessed Liverpool’s best performance of the season against Real Madrid thanks to his selection choices. He has the choice to do the same at the Etihad to send a message before the international break, and for the second November in a row replicate the double over Real Madrid and Man City.Over to you, Arne.
