‘Principal pulled my hair, beat me up’: Humiliated over unpaid fees, UP college student sets himself on fire

A second-year BA student at a college in Muzaffarnagar’s Budhana allegedly set himself on fire on the college campus after he was reportedly denied an examination form over non-payment of fees. He suffered over 70% burns and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi.In a video statement recorded two days before the incident, Ujjwal Rana (20) had accused the principal and police personnel of allegedly assaulting and humiliating him due to the fee non-payment.Sources said he was refused permission to appear for his third semester exam. He immolated himself on campus at 11.30 am on Saturday.Videos of the incident, which have surfaced on social media, show the student engulfed in flames as other students rushed to help. By the time students managed to douse the flames, Ujjwal had suffered extensive burns, his clothes were completely burnt, and his skin had turned black from the flames.Speaking to the media, eyewitnesses and family members, who are currently protesting against the college administration, have alleged that no teacher or staff member intervened to save him and that he lay in pain for nearly half an hour before police arrived and took him to the hospital.Ujjwal was first taken to a local hospital, then referred to Meerut, and later to Delhi due to the severity of his burns.In the video statement, Ujjwal said he had managed to pay part of the fee, Rs 1,700, but the remaining Rs 7,000 was pending.Story continues below this ad“They refused to submit my examination form. The principal insulted me in front of everyone, saying that ‘this college is not a Dharamshala.’ He pulled my hair and beat me. When I spoke for students who couldn’t pay fees, the college called the police. Even the policemen abused me and pushed me out of the college,” he alleged in the video.He further said that if anything were to happen to him, the principal and three policemen should be held responsible.Ujjwal is a resident of Khakaroban village. His father, Harendra, is a farmer who owns about 13 bighas of land where he cultivates sugarcane. His mother passed away a few years ago.Late in the evening, Muzaffarnagar District Magistrate Umesh Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjai Kumar Verma visited the college and directed officials to probe the incident thoroughly.Story continues below this adThe Budhana police, under whose jurisdiction the college falls, has registered a case based on a complaint filed by Ujjwal’s sister, Saloni, against the college principal and others.“We received the complaint at 1 pm on Saturday. The student had poured an inflammable liquid on himself before setting himself ablaze. Strict action will be taken against anyone involved in instigating the student. For security, two sub-inspectors have been deployed with him,” said CO Budhana Gajendra Pal Singh, adding that he is stated to be out of danger.Responding to allegations of police assault, SP Muzaffarnagar Sanjai Kumar told The Indian Express, “The matter has come into our notice. The SPRA of Muzaffarnagar is probing the role of the police personnel who have been accused in the matter. If the investigation confirms their involvement, strict action will be taken.”
