Omari Glasgow and Nicolette Fernandes have been named Guyana’s Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year for 2024 at the National Sports Commission (NSC) awards gala on Saturday evening at Pegasus Suites.National footballer Glasgow, who is the Golden Jaguars’ all-time leading goalscorer, took the men’s top prize, while former world number 19 squash player Fernandes claimed the women’s award for her international dominance.Sprinters Malachi Austin and Athaleyha Hinckson won the junior awards.Glasgow, Guyana’s all-time leading goal scorer, had a stellar run in the CONCACAF Nations League, which earned him both the Best Young Player Award and Top Scorer Award, as he propelled the Golden Jaguars to a historic promotion to League A.The 21-year-old striker, who has notched 21 goals in 33 international appearances, pipped bodybuilder Nicholas Albert to the award.Albert, who won his International Pro Card in 2024, was announced as the runner-up for the award.For the female award, Fernandes had another splendid year as he copped the second World Masters title.The former world number 19 demonstrated her enduring class and competitive fire by achieving an undefeated run to win gold in the Women’s 40 and over category at the World Squash Federation Masters tournament in the Netherlands.This victory adds to her previous success in the Women’s 35 and over category, confirming her status as a multiple World Masters champion and showcasing her continued dominance on the international stage.Fernandes’s influence extends well beyond the glass court. In 2024, she took on a significant administrative role, being appointed Chair of the Women in Sport Commission by the Guyana Olympic Association.Crucially, she has also been instrumental in nurturing the next generation of talent, working closely with the Guyana Squash Association to develop up-and-coming players.Fernandes edged out national teammate Ashley Khalil for the award.In the junior awards, sprinters Malachi Austin and Athaleyha Hinckson were standout performers for Guyana throughout 2024.Hinckson made history by winning Guyana’s first-ever gold medal in the CARIFTA Games U-17 women’s 100m, then following up with gold at the South American U-20 Championships.Such marvelous achievements saw her edge teammate and CARIFTA medallist Tianna Springer to the title.Likewise, Austin won 400m gold for Guyana at the CARIFTA Games and was a part of two record-breaking runs in the 4x400m Mixed relay.News Room’s Sport Editor Avenash Ramzan (right) won Best Broadcast Journalist for 2024 (PHOTO: News Room/Jeremy Jagroop/November 8, 2025)More so, Guyana Harpy Eagles Head Coach, Ryan Hercules, won the coach of the year accolade.In 2024, Hercules masterminded the Harpy Eagles to yet another regional Four-Day title.This victory marked his second consecutive championship as Head Coach and the team’s seventh overall since the inception of the Cricket West Indies Professional Cricket League (PCL) in 2014.His influence extended beyond First-Class cricket.
