Rob Edwards is set to leave Middlesbrough in acrimonious circumstances and not for the first time in his managerial career. The 42-year-old was taken off Saturday’s Championship clash with Birmingham City following interest from Wolves over their vacant managerial position. It came after Edwards missed training on Friday while his pre-match press conference was cancelled. But with uncertainty over Edwards’ future the situation escalated on Saturday morning when Middlesbrough confirmed that they had given Edwards permission to speak to Wolves.A statement from the Championship club read: “Middlesbrough Football Club have, subject to the completion of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves.“We initially rejected an approach from Wolves on the basis that Rob signed a three-year contract with MFC less than six months ago.“Following discussions with Rob we were disappointed to learn that he wanted to speak with Wolves regarding their head coach vacancy. We have now agreed terms with Wolves, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.”Edwards’ impending departure comes with Boro’ sat fourth in the Championship table – five points adrift of leaders Coventry. While his departure is likely to leave a bitter taste for those associated with Middlesbrough, spare a thought for Forest Green Rovers.A similar endingEdwards took charge of the then Gloucestershire club in 2021 and steered them to promotion whilst picking up the League Two Manager of the Year award. But just weeks after their heroics, Edwards secured a move to Watford with Forest Green Rovers claiming negotiations had been done ‘behind our backs’.A statement from Forest Green Rovers at the time read: “FGR confirms the departure of Head Coach Rob Edwards and Assistant head coach Richie Kyle.Rob Edwards led Forest Green to the League Two title in his first season but subsequently left to join WatfordGetty“Rob & Richie were a key part of the team that gained promotion to League One this season.“We’re disappointed that our support, loyalty and honesty towards Rob has been repaid in this way – with negotiations taking place behind our backs.“We had no contact from Watford, from whom we might expect less, but in any event this kind of behaviour gives football a bad name.“We thank Rob for all his work at FGR – forgive him the manner of his departure and wish him well.”Edwards, whose previous managerial role with Luton came to an end in January, was handed a return to the dugout with Middlesbrough in June when he signed a three-year deal. However, the lure of a return to the club he served as a player and the opportunity to try his hand in the Premier League again has proved too strong for him to turn down.GettyEdwards had won seven of his 14 league games as Middlesbrough boss but none of his last three[/caption]Meanwhile, reports have also suggested that being closer to his family who still reside in the Midlands was a key factor behind Edwards’ interest in taking over at Molineux. What did Adrian Durham say on the saga?Discussing his imminent exit, talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham believes Edwards has let the Middlesbrough fans down.“He said he was privileged to be at Middlesbrough and he was wowing about the training ground. All of a sudden someone else has come along,” Durham said.“We’ve seen this so many times before, he could have shown some loyalty.“I think we all felt sympathy when he got the sack at Luton Town despite the fact it was going to be two successive relations and he’d been at the heart of that.“I don’t think he could complain if he’s ever sacked again.Edwards is set for a return to Wolves where he made over 100 appearances as a playerGetty“If it’s about his family being in the Wolverhampton area then why take the Middlesbrough job in the first place.“That’s a load of old rubbish, I’m not having it. I think he’s let the Boro’ fans down.”
