The Kansas City Chiefs desperately tried to bolster their roster at the trade deadline to boost their chances of reaching their sixth Super Bowl in seven seasons. It was revealed on Sunday that the Chiefs had tried to swing a last-minute deal for Seattle Seahawks linebacker Boye Mafe at the trade deadline. The Chiefs tried to land Seahawks LB Mafe at the trade deadlineGettyReid made a late offer for two players, but neither deal materializedGettyHowever, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter, the 6-2 Seahawks pulled the plug on the deal right at the last minute, despite one source believing a deal had been completed. It is unknown what Andy Reid‘s Chiefs offered in the proposed package for Mafe — a rising star who has so far been unproductive by his usual high standards this season. In eight appearances in the 2025 campaign, the 6-foot-4, 261 pound linebacker has amassed just 13 total tackles, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, and zero sacks. Since arriving into the league in 2022 as a second-round draft pick, Mafe has been a key presence on the edge, recording a career-high nine sacks in 2023, and demonstrating his potential to be a player who can produce 10-plus sacks a season. Seattle also kept on to cornerback Riq Woolen, despite also taking calls on the Pro Bowler, and added wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to their offense as they make their intentions clear on wanting to contend for a Super Bowl with Sam Darnold under center. Chiefs missed out on two prime targetsHaving tried — and failed — to acquire Mafe, the Chiefs also reportedly made a play for New York Jets running back Breece Hall at Tuesday’s deadline. Whilst he had to watch the Jets’ fire sale unfold with Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams being dealt elsewhere in blockbuster deals, Hall could only sit and watch his teammates become former teammates as Kansas City’s eleventh-hour offer was rejected. It was reported by SNY’s Connor Hughes that the Chiefs offered a fourth-round pick for Hall, but the Jets were “steadfast in wanting a third” instead. In a now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) post Hall wasn’t coy about his feelings on the Jets’ trade deadline moves, writing, “Sick about my bruddas man. Happy for them but man I’m sick rn.”The addition of a player like Hall would have significantly bolstered a Chiefs offense that ranks 12th in the NFL for rushing yards per game. The Chiefs also tried to make a play at Jets RB Breece Hall, who had to watch his team get blown up at the trade deadlineGettyPatrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense has a myriad of options despite failing to acquire Breece HallGettyBut, with Patrick Mahomes at the helm and an elite receiving corps including that of Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and the return of Rashee Rice, the Chiefs rank sixth in the NFL for total yards per game, averaging 370.1. Seahawks’ Super Bowl bid fueled by star WRMeanwhile in Seattle, with Mafe and Woolen still on the team, the Seahawks have established themselves as one of the NFL’s best defenses, allowing just 18.8 points per contest — the fifth-best mark in the league. On the other side of the ball, veteran quarterback Darnold has arguably the best receiver in football to throw to in Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who already has a league-leading 948 receiving yards — the most by a player under 25 through eight games in NFL history. Sitting atop the NFC West standings with a 6-2 record going into their divisional contest against the Arizona Cardinals, who benched Kyler Murray for Jacoby Brissett, the 23-year-old receiver has three additional opportunities to make the record books. If he has eight-plus receptions and 120 receiving yards, he would become the first player ever to record those numbers in five consecutive games. JSN has established himself as one of the NFL’s best receivers in 2025GettyFurthermore, JSN could also join Antonio Brown and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin with at least 75 yards in each of his first nine games of a single season, simultaneously moving into the top five for most receiving yards by a player in that game span in the Super Bowl era. As it stands, the Seahawks have have the sixth-best chance to make the Super Bowl in talkSPORT’s latest Super Bowl contender rankings, whilst the Chiefs rank just ahead in fifth.
