(File)With 207 beds, the Emergency and Trauma Block at Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, inaugurated in August this year, is the largest in the region. In just over two months, the new block is witnessing almost a three times increase in patients from across the region, overburdening the healthcare staff and the facilities here. With more than 100 per cent occupancy, with around 300 patients daily, the system is facing a lot of pressure, and as per Prof G P Thami, Director-Principal, GMCH, till health services are improved on the periphery, and the system of referrals is executed, government hospitals in Chandigarh will face this unprecedented rush and no matter how many beds are increased, there will always be a need for trolleys, especially in the emergency and trauma departments of the hospitals.Previously, GMCH-32 had just 50 emergency beds, but about 120 patients were admitted here every day, and the new block was expected to reduce the rush at the PGI Emergency, which has 100 beds, but on average, 250 to 300 patients are treated daily. The new block comprises two basements and three upper storeys, housing a state-of-the-art triage area, fully equipped operation theatres, intensive care units, and dedicated surgical and medical wards. It is further supported by advanced diagnostic facilities, including X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, and comprehensive blood investigation services. This infrastructure is designed to improve outcomes in emergency care by reducing delays, disabilities, and mortality among critically ill and trauma patients. Also, with the new emergency and trauma block operational, the area of the old emergency was vacant, and the plan was to ease the rush of the maternity ward, which comprises the labour room, and give 25-30 beds for maternity care. But with the block already facing a shortage of beds, GMCH will now propose that this area also be used for emergency care.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:chandigarhGMCH-32
