Surat police late on Wednesday arrested RTO inspector Nikunj Goswami and his aide for their alleged involvement in shooting at Surat Range Forest Officer Sonal Solanki on November 6.Goswami told police he wanted to gain custody of his four-year-old son and his wife (Sonal Solanki) didn’t even allow him to meet him in the last three months.On Wednesday, Nikunj Goswami, along with his aide Ishwar Goswami, arrived at the Additional Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate First Class Court of Judge SK Fataniya at Kathor court.Story continues below this adSources said when all the listed matters were sorted out, Nikunj and Ishwar were the only ones present in the courtroom, before recess, at around 2.00 pm.On being inquired, Nikunj told the judge he had come with an application to surrender himself before the court.The judge rejected Nikunj’s application for surrender because there were charges under the Atrocity Act against him. The court could not make a decision as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the special Atrocity court in Surat city.Kamrej police staff, along with LCB (Local Crime Branch) police, apprehended them at the court.Story continues below this adThe duo was taken to the LCB police station in Kamrej on Wednesday afternoon. They were arrested on charges of attempted murder, the Arms Act, and various sections of the Atrocity Act.Sonal Solanki’s condition is still critical, according to doctors at Surat’s PP Savani hospital.After primary questioning, Nikunj admitted to stalking his wife Sonal and said he was involved in the firing incident, police saidTalking to The Indian Express, Surat Rural Local Crime branch police inspector RB Bhatol said, “Sonal Solanki (RFO) was staying with her parents at Jokha village in Surat district over a year ago, with her 4-year-old son, after getting separated from her husband over frequent quarrel. She had also filed family dispute cases in the Surat district court, which are still pending. Nikunj Goswami wanted custody of his son, and for the last three months, he was not allowed to meet his son by Sonal. He tried his best to convince her to meet his son, but it all failed. Keeping this in mind, he contacted his friend Ishwar Goswami and hatched a plan to eliminate her.”Story continues below this adHe further added, “To track her movements, Nikunj installed a GPS monitoring system in Sonal’s car. On November 3, she discovered the tracking device and lodged a complaint of stalking against Nikunj Goswami at Kamrej police station. He bought a bike and handed over the gun he had purchased about a year earlier to Ishwar. He persuaded Ishwar to kill her. On November 6, when Sonal left her house in a car to drop off her son to school, Ishwar followed her. Somewhere between Okha and Vav village, he signalled for her to stop the car. When Sonal rolled down the window, Ishwar took out a pistol from his pocket and fired one shot at her head, between the right ear and the forehead, and then escaped.”Bhatol further added, “Nikunj was present approximately 8 kilometres away from the scene near APMC market at Sahara Darwaja in Surat city. After the incident, Nikunj and Ishwar were in contact via phones. Following the incident, Nikunj left Surat city, and Ishwar also left Surat. The duo met in Indore and later decided to surrender themselves before the court.”
