‘Blow it up’ – DeMarcus Cousins causes stir by calling for two teams to abandon cities because of ‘no fans’

Wait 5 sec.

Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins gave his opinion on which two NBA teams should relocate in the near future. The last NBA team to relocate were the Nets, who left New Jersey to move to Brooklyn in 2012, although the last major relocation was the Seattle Supersonics moving to Oklahoma in 2008 and becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are the current champions. The Pelicans moved to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002 and are now being told to move againGETTYOn an episode of “Run It Back Cousins claimed that both the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans have declining fan bases. The 2020 NBA champion even went on to say that the franchise doesn’t even sell tickets well, prices are low, and nobody watches them from home.“I think it’s time [for the Grizzlies and Pelicans to relocate],” Cousins said.“I think it was time, 5 to 6 years ago. Especially for New Orleans. You go to the games, and there are about 36 people there. Popcorn is a dollar. Courtside’s $25.”“There’s not really much going on. There’s not much success happening for just that part of it.“It’s time. Blow it up, move on. There are no fans.”Cousins, who used to play for the Pelicans, went viral on X for his ruthless take with some slamming the four-time All-Star while others agreed.“Look at the product. What do the fans have to be entertained by?” one fan wrote on X.“$25 for courtside and $1 popcorn? When has Boogie last bought tickets and popcorn? 1985?” another said.“Some of these teams just need to go man. Wizards pelicans hornets,” another wrote as they agreed with Cousins. The Grizzlies were founded in Vancouver before moving to Memphis in 2001GETTYThe last team to relocate where the Nets who went from New Jersey to BrooklynGETTYAccording to the Sports Business Journal, the Pelicans had the sixth-lowest average home attendance in the NBAMeanwhile, the Grizzlies were ranked fourth-worst.This is even though the NBA enjoyed its second-best season ever when it comes to attendance, with the league averaging 18,147 fans.To be fair to Cousins, the Pelicans’ relocation is not controversial. The NBA is unlikely to expand as owners of other teams won’t want to share the 11-year $76 billion TV deal it signed ahead of this season. So the alternative is to relocate teams and move them to more attractive markets like Seattle, Las Vegas or Mexico City. The last major relcoaction was in 2008 when the Seattle Supersonics became the Oklahoma City ThunderGETTYAnd with the Pelicans facing uncertainty about their future at their arena, the Smoothie King Center, as their lease ends in 2029.Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix recently reported that the NBA will target small-market teams with arena deals that expire before 2030, should they press ahead with relocation plans.“While expansion is the NBA’s preferred method to get teams in Seattle and Las Vegas, relocation has been discussed, as NBA commissioner Adam Silver told SI last month,” Mannix writes.“And while no league official would come within 100 miles of publicly naming relocation candidates, the Grizzlies and Pelicans—small-market teams with arena deals that expire before the end of the decade—are often whispered as the most likely targets.”Perhaps Cousins’ opinion wasn’t so far-fetched.Stay up to date with the latest from the NBA across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
