That is the sale price for art collector Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon’s blue diamond pendant, known as the Mellon Blue. The 9.51-carat fancy vivid blue, internally flawless pear-shaped diamond, sold on Tuesday at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction, held at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva. While that result may seem sizable, it’s actually 22 percent less than what the pendant sold for 11 years ago. Diehl approaches these ventures holistically, coming perhaps the closest anyone has to articulating what exactly Citarella’s project is. His career has veered sharply away from the usual art world circuit. Instead, as Diehl suggests, Citarella’s art may well be his carefully crafted public persona.
