Stevenson is perhaps best known for his novels Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson still ranks as one of the most translated authors in the world. On December 3, 1894, Stevenson died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage in his home in Samoa at the age of 44. He was buried on the summit of Mount Vaea.
