The BBC edit reportedly created an impression that Trump had called for violence.AdvertisementThe BBC Chair Samir Shah sent a personal letter to the White House saying he and the corporation were sorry about the edit of the speech which Trump gave on January 6, just ahead of the riot at the US Capitol as the Congress was poised to certify the 2020 US presidential election victory of former President Joe Biden, which Trump has repeatedly alleged was stolen from him.In a statement, the broadcaster said, “While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim.” BBC said it would not air the 2024 programme again and that the edit had given “the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action”.Trump’s lawyers have threatened to file a defamation suit of $1 billion against the broadcaster if the BBC doesn’t issue a retraction, apologises and compensates him. Though the news outlet doesn’t respond to Trump’s demand but indirectly signalled the US president’s claim for financial damages is equally untenable. In its retraction, BBC wrote, “We accept that our edit unintentionally created the impression that we were showing a single continuous section of the speech, rather than excerpts from different points in the speech, and that this gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.”(with inputs from agencies)AdvertisementTop story1UK suspends some intel sharing with US over boat strike concerns as France says US military operations in Caribbean violate international law2‘World does not understand how dumb he really is’: What Jeffrey Epstein said about Donald Trump in an email exchange3US Government Shutdown 2025 Live Updates: Trump signs funding bill to end America’s longest running government shutdown4US to tighten visa oversight, Kristi Noem says only ‘right people’ should get in5World Kindness Day 2025: Date, theme, history, significance, and more detailsAdvertisementLoading Taboola...
