Ahead of Syrian president’s meeting with President Donald Trump, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations says Damascus and Jerusalem are on the verge of a breakthrough in talks for a border deal.By World Israel News StaffIsrael and Syria are on the verge of reaching a new security agreement, senior Syrian diplomat said over the weekend. On Saturday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in Washington ahead of his meeting Monday with President Donald Trump at the White House. The two leaders, who first met at a summit hosted by Saudi Arabia this spring, are expected to discuss the new Syrian regime’s strategic alignment in the Middle East, with an emphasis on its inclusion in an international coalition against the ISIS terror group, sanctions relief for Syria, and efforts by the US to broker a comprehensive deal between Syria and Israel. The US has for months quietly mediated high-level negotiations between the two sides for a possible security deal, replacing the 1974 separation of forces agreement which established a demilitarized zone on the Israeli-Syrian frontier after the Yom Kippur War.The agreement, which lapsed following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024, could soon be replaced with a new security arrangement, Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations Ibrahim al-Albi said.In comments publicized by the state media outlet al-Watan, al-Albi said that an agreement “could be made public at any moment.”Al-Albi emphasized that the two sides are currently negotiating a border deal, while a more comprehensive agreement – sought by the Trump administration – could be reached at a later time.“The focus of the discussions is mainly on border points, the number of forces on each side, and the like,” said al-Albi.“The discussions include reference to several issues and concerns of both sides. If Israel has security concerns, they can be addressed. If there are other issues that are not security-related, they require a different method of handling.”Earlier this year, Israel intervened in southern Syria’s Jabal Druze region to protect the country’s Druze community from radical Sunni militias and regime forces. Israel has pushed to include protections for minority groups in a possible deal with Syria; a condition Damascus has thus far resisted.Al-Albi added that al-Sharaa’s meeting with Trump provided a “historic opportunity” for Syria to reach an agreement with Israel which would provide “peace, security, and stability along [Syria’s] southern border.”The post Syria says deal with Israel could be reached ‘at any moment’ appeared first on World Israel News.
