If past is prologue, the Pentagon will soon release its annual report on Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China. Commonly known as the China military power report, this publication is more than just another report from the Department of Defense. It plays a vital role in the public’s awareness of the world’s largest military build-up since World War II, which Beijing often shrouds in opacity.  In 1999, Congress required the department to provide a yearly report on China’s “current and future military strategy.” The first edition, released in 2000, spanned just 23 pages.
