Does the 'quality' of pitch you play on matter?

Wait 5 sec.

Hi all - Rugby fan here, but never played myself. Was watching the Sharks V Bulls game and noticed the pitch/field looked pretty rough in some spots. To be fair most of the field looked normal, maybe just a bit patchy. But does that make a difference? Some spots looked almost like sand instead of just dead or dry grass. If you field is very sandy/dead grass, does it affect how you play? Does it hurt more when tackled/sliding? Do you slip more or less or a dry pitch?
