Activists from the Ġustizzja għal Artna campaign will visit towns and villages across Malta to speak to people about their concerns regarding the proposed planning laws.“Over the coming months, representatives of the Ġustizzja għal Artna campaign, together with local groups, will tour communities across the islands to explain how the proposed laws threaten our quality of life, environment, cultural heritage, and practices that define our country and its way of life,” the campaign said.“The public will also have the opportunity to visit our stands to share their queries and suggestions.”Their first stop will be at Birżebbuġa Parish Square on Sunday 30th November, starting at 9:30am, in collaboration with Għaqda Storja u Kultura Birżebbuġa.Activists have raised the alarm on a number of points in the reforms – particularly proposals that would allow planning policies to override local plans, limit the power of the courts to revoke planning permits and allow them to impose €5,000 fines if they deem an appeal to be frivolous or vexatious in nature.“This legal package has been designed with one purpose: to satisfy the wishes of developers,” Ġustizzja għal Artna said.“It would open up every corner of the country to reckless construction and allow the rich and powerful to ride roughshod over local communities and the common good.”Last month, Prime Minister Robert Abela said he wants to reach an agreement with activists before moving ahead with the proposed planning reforms.Cover photo: A protest against the planning bills (Photo: Moviment Graffitti)•
