Newport County took no time at all to sack manager Dave Hughes.Hughes was axed by the League Two side after a 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury on Saturday.GettyNewport are at risk of heading down to the National League[/caption]The 47-year-old was only appointed at Rodney Parade in May.And he has lasted just six months in charge, departing with a record of four wins, four draws and 14 defeats.Hughes leaves the Welsh side rock bottom of the fourth-tier and in danger of dropping out of professional football. With their situation looking perilous, Newport made the decision to sack Hughes just an hour after their latest defeat.Confirming the news, Newport used just 55 words to say goodbye. They wrote: “Newport County AFC can confirm that, following a disappointing start to the season, the club has parted company with Head Coach Dave Hughes and Assistant Manager Wayne Hatswell.“We thank both Dave and Wayne for their hard work and commitment during their time at the club and wish them the very best for the future.”Hughes had spoken to the club’s website only a short time earlier to discuss the latest defeat.“We had two chances really early that we have to take,” the Welshman said. “I don’t think there was anything in the game. For me, it should have been 0-0. The goal is avoidable. “We probably give Jordan [Wright] a challenge by throwing it back to him, then we don’t land on seconds. “We try to play when we should just hook it clear. It’s symptomatic of this season and losing by the odd goal.”Hughes went on to pay credit to his players and supporters in his final interview. He continued: “I can’t fault the lads’ effort and application. They’ve been a credit to themselves. “Yes, we’ve made mistakes, everyone makes mistakes, but I’m not going to criticise their commitment.“The supporters again have been terrific. You often see teams down the bottom and the atmosphere gets hostile or volatile, but the way they supported the players today, the way they backed them consistently, they’ve been a credit to the players and a credit to the club. We can’t thank them enough.”More to follow...
