Richard Riakporhe scores brutal KO over son of British cult hero on Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn undercard

Wait 5 sec.

Richard Riakporhe made quick work of Tommy Welch on the Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn II undercard on Saturday night.‘The Midnight Train’ dropped Welch thrice en route to a spiteful second-round technical knockout in only his second fight in boxing’s glamour division. Welch (16-1), the son of former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Scott, proved no match for the seasoned Riakporhe. While Welch’s 16-fight unbeaten streak looked good on paper, most of those wins came against journeymen and low-level prospects.Riakporhe (19-1), on the other hand, had already challenged unsuccessfully for the WBO cruiserweight title against Chris Billam-Smith last year and scooped the Lonsdale belt in 2019 with a win over Jack Massey. The experience showed, as Riakporhe methodically dispatched his rival.Speaking in the immediate aftermath of his victory, Riakporhe said: “2026, I’m coming fast, I’m ready, and I’m coming for you all.“It’s a beautiful stage, this is what I envisioned for myself. I want to be a heavyweight champion.“Experience was the difference, I read him and I pounced on him straight away. I respect him; it’s not easy.“I’m interested in the domestic scene, I want everybody.”Story of the fight Welch came flying out of the gates from the off, looking to force Riakporhe on his heels. Riakporhe blasted away Welch in two roundsGETTYBut the former British 200lbs champion weathered the early storm and came back firing in the second stanza.Midway through the round, the 35-year-old sent Welch hurtling underneath the ropes with a big right hand.‘Hell Boy’ regained his footing, yet he did so on unsteady legs.Another right hand sent him back down to the canvas, and although he met the count, he was quickly decked again. This time, the referee had seen enough and waved off the contest.Post-fight, Riakporhe’s promoter, Ben Shalom, called for domestic dust-ups with the likes of Derek Chisora and fierce rival Lawrence Okolie. In victory, Riakporhe picked up the Commonwealth Silver trinket. Moses Itauma holds the full title.
