Gerwyn Price has added a little bit of spice to his Grand Slam of Darts semi-final against Luke Humphries. The Welshman takes on the world No.1 in Wolverhampton on Sunday for a spot in the final, and his opponent is in top form, despite struggling with a back injury.Price is ready for Humphries, and doesn’t want any excusesGetty Humphries revealed he was dealing with ‘crippling pain’ in the form of a back spasm before his 10-3 last-16 win over Jurjen van der Velde, needing three hours of physio to get him on the oche. However, Price wasn’t ready to believe he was facing a wounded animal when asked about Cool Hand’s struggles by talkSPORT.“Yeah… back injury yeah? You believe that?” he responded with a chuckle. “Sometimes people are just like ‘I’ve got a bit of an injury’ and if you fail, you’ve got something to blame. “I don’t believe he’s got an injury and I’m going out there to play the best Luke Humphries possible. “That’s the way I’ll focus and I’ll focus on my own game and if he plays his best and I play my best I’m sure it’ll be a good game.”Price in top form ahead of Humphries showdownPrice lost his group opener at the Grand Slam 5-4 against Ricky Evans, but has since made things look easy on his way to the final four. The ‘Iceman’ admits he needs to ‘go up a gear or two’ to make the final, but will the fact he’s playing Humphries mean he needs to squeeze out even more?“Not really. I’ve played Luke loads of times,” he responded. “I know how to play well, but that’s the same with any player these days, any player can beat anyone. Humphries may be world No.1, but Price is only interested in himselfRexHumphries said he was struggling with pain after his last 16 victory“Luke is playing a bit better the last two months, but if you look over the last ten months, he hasn’t been as good as when he was World Champion the year before.“With Luke Littler coming on the scene and chasing him for his No.1 spot, I think he’s under a little bit of pressure. It’s nice to be No.1 but it’s hard to stay there.“I’m not worried about who I play, I know if I play my A game I’ll win, if I don’t it’s going to be a battle, but I’ve got a game to battle as well.“It’s pointless thinking about anybody else. The more you worry about someone else’s game then already you’re off your own game. “I say it every time, I play the board, I play the best I can in my game and I can’t control Luke or any other player so I don’t worry about those and concentrate on my own game.“I prefer him at his best, he’ll bring the best out of me so hopefully he hasn’t got a bad back.”Price is ready to fly back up the rankings thanks to a solid yearGetty2021 World Champion Price is currently ranked 14th in the world after a difficult 2024, but will likely leap right back into the higher echelons thanks to a solid follow up campaign. The two Lukes have taken the spotlight during his down period, and Price isn’t begrudging them in the slightest.“If you look at the last few years they deserve all the attention they get,” he explained. “Last season for me was the worst season I’ve had, but I’ve bounced back this season and finished top of the Pro Tour, top of the Player’s Championship, I’m the No.1 seed going into the Players Championship finals, but it’s just producing it on the big stage. “I have been doing it in spells but hopefully two more wins and that’s another major under my belt and that will give me full of confidence going to the Players Championship and World Championship.”
