Milos Kerkez Liverpool fear hits Hungary – “His self-confidence has disappeared”

Wait 5 sec.

Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai celebrated a vital win for Hungary as they push for a place at the 2026 World Cup, but the Liverpool left-back faced more questions.Hungary secured a 1-0 win away to Armenia on Thursday evening which keeps up their hopes of at least reaching the playoff round of World Cup qualifying.Barnabas Varga scored the only goal of the game, doing so via an assist from Szoboszlai, who clipped in a beautiful cross for the striker to head home.Kerkez and Szoboszlai both started against Armenia, rekindling their partnership down the left-hand side with the left-back in his natural role and Liverpool’s No. 8 deployed in midfield. While Szoboszlai made the impact manager Marco Rossi will have hoped for in the first half, there was more concern around Kerkez’s performance.Nemzeti Sport‘s Zsolt Somogyi rated the 22-year-old as a six out of 10, and while not a terrible score, the journalist’s assessment is more of a worry.“There was uncertainty in him,” Somogyi explained, pointing to issues with his use of the ball.“[It is] as if his self-confidence has disappeared a little in Liverpool.”Per FotMob, Kerkez still completed 45 of his 50 attempted passes (90%), but it appears as though the statistics fail to tell the full story.None of his six attempted crosses found their target, despite only one player – Szoboszlai (5/8 or 63%) – attempting more, while only 50 percent of his eight long balls were accurate.Kerkez was reliable defensively, with the joint-most tackles of any player (three), but he completed only one of his four attempted dribbles (25%).The concerns over his self-confidence appear to ring true, particularly when married to his performances so far for Liverpool. With the Republic of Ireland earning a shock 2-0 victory over Portugal later that night – aided by Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card and a stellar display from Caoimhin Kelleher – Hungary could even finish top of Group F.It means if Hungary beat Ireland on Sunday and Portugal fail to win at home to Armenia, Rossi’s side will qualify directly for next summer’s tournament.
