(File photo)The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has begun across 12 states, including West Bengal. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) continue door-to-door distribution of enumeration forms, and, along with Booth Level Agents (BLAs), are assisting voters and clarifying procedures. Here is what to do if you are not in the country, or if a family member whose name is on the voter list has passed away.If a deceased relative’s name is still on the 2025 voter listIf a person whose name appears on the 2025 voter list has passed away, the BLO conducting the door-to-door visit will make a note of the death. Those who have not submitted the enumeration form will appear on a separate list to be published at every panchayat and municipality office, as well as on the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO)’s website. The reason for omission will be mentioned there, and the deceased person’s name will automatically be removed from the voter list.According to the Representation of the People Act, electoral rolls in West Bengal are maintained in three languages — Bengali, English, and, in some areas, Hindi. Voters may fill the form in any of these languages without issue. However, using Bengali or English is preferable, as it helps cross-check names more easily when the final rolls are published, particularly in areas where the roll is not printed in Devanagari script (Hindi). If you are not in IndiaIf a person who is outside the country is already named on the voter list, their relative can submit the form on their behalf. Following this, a notice for hearing will be issued. The applicant can attend the hearing in person or, with the satisfaction of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), appear virtually. The original documents will then be verified physically at a later stage before the ERO makes the final decision.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:West Bengal
