Thomas Tuchel should consider recalling Fikayo Tomori to address a defensive injury dilemma in the England squad. That’s the view of talkSPORT’s Jeff Stelling as the Three Lions look to work around a lack of fitness amongst their centre-back options.Tomori hasn’t been involved with England since late 2023GettyTuchel named Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah and John Stones in his England squad for their November fixtures. However, Trevoh Chalobah has been called up as cover for Guehi, who suffered a foot injury last week. The Crystal Palace star would have likely started with Stones against Serbia and Albania in what is a strong centre-back pairing. But the latter has his own fitness struggles which leaves Konsa, the most-selected England defender under Tuchel, as their main choice. To help alleviate the issue, Stelling believes that Tomori, who hasn’t received a call-up since 2023, should be drafted into the squad.“I took a look at the players who’d be considering themselves to be in contention on Thomas Tuchel’s plane to the World Cup,” he said on talkSPORT Breakfast. “We’re going to talk about England’s centre-back issue. Marc Guehi is injured at the moment and we hope that is not a long-term injury. But England have got a real problem at centre-back because who plays with John Stones? “John Stones is desperately injury-prone. So I think Ezri Konsa has suddenly gone to number one, in the absence of Guehi, and there’s Dan Burn. “Tuchel doesn’t seem to fancy [Harry] Maguire at all and in May, Tuchel said that Trevoh Chalobah was ahead of Maguire. So he doesn’t seem to fancy him at all. “Quansah is in the squad, but he’s been in the squad before and not been given an opportunity, so I’m not too sure how much he fancies him. I think it’s a real issue for England.”Tomori is a regular player for Milan, but can’t seem to get a look-in with EnglandGettyStelling has urged Tuchel to consider handing a call-up to TomoriGettyAlly McCoist said: “I think it’s a massive issue, because the defence is clearly his biggest problem. “I think it has been, I think it’ll continue to be. In the forward areas, they’re blessed with incredible talent.”Stelling added: “Jarrad Branthwaite is out injured and Levi Colwill’s out for the entire season. So there’s four injuries that you’ve got at centre-back. That’s a big problem. “Shall I tell you what I think they should look at? They’ve probably missed the boat now. I know a couple have pulled out of this squad, and it’s late in the day, but Fikayo Tomori, who plays for [AC] Milan. “He seems to be out of sight, out of mind. He’s 27 and should be at the peak of his powers now. He was in the Serie A team of the year a couple of years ago. “We know what Italian defenders are like so that takes some doing. He’s a regular for Milan. He hasn’t started for England since October 2023, when they played him at left-back.Tomori has struggled for regular minutes with England“He’s played nearly 140 [Serie A] games for Milan and yet he seems to be out of sight, out of mind. “John Stones is a lovely footballer, but I think that fragility just worries me a bit and he’s not a regular starter for Man City now. “Guehi is the first name in the defence anyway, but if he were to be injured, that’s our concern. We have to have some quality standby.”Tomori’s England career so farAfter featuring for the Canada U20s side, Tomori joined the England U19s in 2016 and later won the U20 World Cup.The former Chelsea defender earned his first ever senior call-up in October 2019 and made his debut a month later.Tomori has played just five times for England in total, with his last outing coming against Malta in November 2023.Tomori made his first of five England appearances six years agoGettyBut at club level, the 27-year-old has reached 188 appearances for Milan and is now in his sixth season at San Siro.He has started ten of his 11 outings so far this season, although is yet to have come into Tuchel’s thinking in the past three squads. What next for Tomori? With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Tomori will hope to stand a chance of being considered as part of the England squad. All 48 competing nations are set to name 26-man squads, although reports suggest that this could be increased to 30.England picked a mix of nine centre-backs and full-backs at the 2022 World Cup, none of whom were Tomori. But he could work his way into contention for a spot on the plane if the squad cap is increased by a further four players.England are already confirmed to be at the World Cup next summerGettyUntil then, Tomori will have to keep working on a route back into the England set-up.The Three Lions have already qualified for the World Cup, with their upcoming fixtures against Serbia and Albania their last in 2025.England will return in March and then June for two final international breaks, which could offer Tomori the chance of a long-awaited return.June 11 marks the beginning of the World Cup, with Tuchel set to reveal his squad in the weeks prior.
