New poll shows the overwhelming majority of Israelis support President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, initiated last month, even though most doubt Hamas will actually surrender control of Gaza.By World Israel News StaffAn overwhelming majority of Israelis support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to accept the 20-point Gaza peace plan drafted by the Trump administration, according to a new poll, even as most Israelis express skepticism regarding the likelihood that Hamas will surrender control over the Gaza Strip – a key part of the plan.On Tuesday, the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI) released the findings of its latest Israeli Society Index, which tracks popular opinion among Israelis regarding major political and social issues. The index, based on a poll of Israeli Jews and Arabs, found that 90% of Israelis believe Israel acted appropriately in accepting President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war.Fifty-five percent say Israel did so because “it had no choice,” while 35% said they believe the plan is good, and that it was adopted based on its own merits. While a major provision of the plan is the demilitarization of Gaza and the removal of Hamas from power, only 16% of Israelis believe Hamas will actually cease to be a major force in governing the Gaza Strip.A quarter of Israelis (25%) believe Hamas will continue to rule Gaza directly, and another third (31%) think Hamas will have “a significant role” in governing Gaza, while 20% estimate it will have a limited role in governing the Strip.Jewish Israelis are particularly pessimistic regarding the prospects of removing Hamas from power, with 60% estimating that Hamas will continue to have a significant role in governing Gaza.Nearly a third (32%) of Israelis think the ceasefire will last only a few more weeks, while 20% believe it will last a few more months.Roughly a fifth (19%) think there will be calm for one to two years, while another fifth (18%) estimate there will be a prolonged period quiet lasting several years.Nearly half of Israelis (46%) want new elections as soon as possible, while 10% say new elections should be held in the next six months.Forty percent say elections should be held as currently scheduled, next fall. When asked whether they believe Israel behaves as an American protectorate, deferring too much to Washington, 45% of Israelis believe Jerusalem aligns itself with America’s positions to a proper extend, compared to 31% who said Israel does somewhat too much to align itself with America’s positions, and 15% who said Israel does far too much in this regard. The post 9 in 10 Israelis back Trump’s Gaza plan, but few believe Hamas will cede control appeared first on World Israel News.
