Big news for Malta’s fight against marine plastic pollution as Żibel, with the support of the Alfred Mizzi Foundation, has just unveiled a brand-new shredding machine, the first step in transforming tons of plastic waste collected from Malta’s seabed and coastlines into something new.Since 2018, Żibel has been storing all the plastic gathered during clean-ups, dreaming of the day it could start turning it into reusable material. Now, that vision is becoming reality. The shredder breaks the plastic down into smaller flakes, which will later be washed, dried, and remolded into brand-new pieces, all part of a full, local recycling system. The Alfred Mizzi Foundation has been backing Żibel’s mission since 2019, helping bring marine debris recycling in Malta to the next level. As Żibel puts it: “From sea to home, we’re keeping it local and sustainable!” With more machines on the way, Malta is one step closer to closing the loop on marine plastics while keeping the fight against pollution homegrown.•
