‘Tom Aspinall’s right there’ – Jon Jones questioned over decision to fight Alex Pereira at UFC White House

Wait 5 sec.

Jon Jones’ decision to fight UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira isn’t a ‘logical’ one. That’s according to heavyweight legend Alistair Overeem, who told talkSPORT.com that although he views Jones as a ‘master strategist,’ he isn’t sure why ‘Bones’ has favoured a fight with Pereira over Tom Aspinall.Jones retired seven months after defending the heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309GettyHe has since verbally agreed to face Pereira at the UFC White House card in 2026GettyJones retired from MMA in June but has since reversed his decision in the hope of fighting at the UFC’s White House card in 2026.The MMA great had been linked to face Aspinall in a heavyweight title bout for months, but constantly dismissed the idea of fighting the Englishman.Jones reportedly turned down $30million to fight Aspinall before retiring, and the latter has since made his first defence of the belt against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321.Despite admitting this month that he was ‘wrong’ in terms of his actions over the Aspinall fight, the 38-year-old has been firm on wanting to make a comeback against Pereira. Pereira reclaimed his light heavyweight throne at UFC 320 and called to fight Jones after his triumph, which the American gladly accepted.“Alex, I’d be down to bring the highest skill level to the White House,” Jones wrote on social media.“I appreciate the respect you showed. Let’s dance.”However, Overeem, who challenged for the UFC heavyweight title in 2016, doesn’t see the value in Jones fighting Pereira.Jon Jones fighting Alex Pereira isn’t logical, says Alistair Overeem“Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on there,” Overeem said when asked about Jones vs Pereira at the White House.“For him to want to fight a fighter that’s a little bit lower in the weight class doesn’t really seem logical to me. Overeem labelled Jones a ‘master strategist’ but said there’s no logic behind the American’s decision to fight PereiraGetty“Tom Aspinall’s right there, so I don’t know. I don’t know what his strategy is.“Obviously, there is a strategy. Otherwise, he’d be quiet. So, there is a strategy.”Overeem: Jones knows what he’s doing with Pereira call-outOvereem trained with Jones’ coach, Greg Jackson, for years at Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during his career. So ‘The Demolition Man’ is acutely aware of proceedings at the former UFC heavyweight champion’s camp.“Let’s not forget Jon Jones is a master strategist,” Overeem added.“It’s not only Jon Jones, it’s also Greg Jackson. I had the fortune of training there for four years, so I know that highly intelligent people come to win.Overeem trained at the same gym as Jones for four years during his near 25-year career as a professional mixed martial artistGetty“And it’s a beauty to watch, right? It’s a beautiful sport.”There are no suggestions as to whether UFC CEO Dana White would honour Jones’ agreement with Pereira to fight at the White House. He has already said that matchmaking for the iconic card won’t begin until February.Pereira broke his foot during his win over Magomed Ankalaev last month, so he could be on the sidelines for longer than expected.Jones, meanwhile, hasn’t said whether he would accept a comeback fight before the White House card, but would likely rather avoid any dangerous match-ups before a potential meeting with the Brazilian.Should the fight come to fruition, there’s no doubt it would prove highly lucrative for the UFC brass, especially as the promotion enters a new $7.7billion broadcast deal with CBS and Paramount. The White House card is set to take on US President Donald Trump’s birthday on June 14, 2026UFCWhite has never said he plans to have Jones on the UFC White House cardHowever, White’s relationship with Jones is not in a good place right now, and he may favour putting active fighters on the White House bill.He previously placed the odds of Jones featuring on the card at ‘a billion to one,’ citing a lack of trust in his former champion as the biggest reason why.Overeem was speaking to talkSPORT.com on behalf of Bahrain-based promotion Brave CF, before his attendance at Brave CF 100 this past weekend.Overeem handed Muhammad Mokaev the flyweight title after the Briton ruthlessly knocked out Gerard Burns in the co-main event. All the action was streamed live on the talkSPORT MMA YouTube channel.
