(File Photo)US President Donald Trump on Sunday promised $2,000 payments to most Americans, calling it a “dividend” linked to his tariff policy, in a flurry of Truth Social posts. In one of several morning posts, Trump wrote: “A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.”Trump did not say when the payments would be made or define who would be considered “high income.”The announcement came as the longest government shutdown in US history continued, forcing many Americans to rely on food banks. A day earlier, Trump had attended a lavish Mar-a-Lago dinner, featuring beef filet, truffle dauphinoise, pan-seared scallops, and a trio of desserts, including “Trump chocolate cake.”Defending his tariff plan, Trump wrote: “People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k’s are Highest EVER.”He added that the United States was “taking in Trillions of Dollars” and would soon begin paying down its “ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion,” citing record investment and factory growth. The Supreme Court last week heard arguments over Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs a move three lower courts had ruled illegal. Justices appeared sceptical of the administration’s stance.Responding to that, Trump argued: “The President of the United States is allowed (and fully approved by Congress!) to stop ALL TRADE with a Foreign Country… but is not allowed to put a simple Tariff on a Foreign Country, even for purposes of NATIONAL SECURITY? That is NOT what our great Founders had in mind!”Most Read1Philippines evacuates 100,000 residents as Super Typhoon Fung-wong threatens torrential rains, destructive winds2Pakistan’s 27th Amendment Bill: 7 things to know about the proposed constitutional changes3‘Talks are over’: Pakistan, Afghanistan blame each other as Istanbul peace talks collapse after two days4US govt launches 175 probes into ‘potential abuses’ in H-1B visa programme5Talks to end US shutdown look promising, Senate majority leader says6Powerful quake strikes off the coast of Japan, tsunami advisory lifted after 3 hoursHe went on to claim that businesses were “pouring into the USA” because of tariffs, adding in all caps: “HAS THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT NOT BEEN TOLD THIS???
