Manchester City v Liverpool: The Opposition

Wait 5 sec.

Manchester City face a tough weekend test as they welcome Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium. City are in-form at the moment and face a Liverpool side that has struggled in recent weeks, undergoing a difficult patch that was similar to City’s form last season. The Blues lost nine from thirteen games in a barren spell that cost them the Premier League title and any chance of progressing in the Champions League and the Mersey Reds will be anxious to avoid repeating City’s antics. One point separates the two teams and the winner will move closer to leaders Arsenal, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Sunderland on Saturday evening.FormTo say Liverpool’s form has been erratic is an understatement. After winning their first seven games in all competitions, Liverpool then slumped to four straight defeats, losing at Crystal Palace (2-1), Galatasaray (1-0), Chelsea (2-1) and at home to Manchester United (1-2).After seemingly stopping to rot with a 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt, Liverpool then suffered a 3-2 loss at Brentford before Palace dumped them out of the League Cup, with the Eagles winning 3-0 at Anfield. The Reds have since recovered again, recording a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa and a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League, which has their supporters giddy once more (it doesn’t take much).Liverpool have struggled away from home this season, winning two and losing three. They have scored eight goals so far, conceded nine, keeping one clean sheet and failing to score once. They have scored in all of their away games in the Premier League up to now.Danger MenMo Salah is the obvious threat to the Blues defence. The Egyptian, who always manages to score against City, usually a penalty, has scored four goals so far this season and is Liverpool’s top scorer. He has had 23 shots in ten matches, and has a goal conversion rate of 17% and a shot accuracy of 39%.Cody Gakpo has three goals from 26 shots, whilst Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch also have three goals each. Dutch striker Gravenberch has the highest shot accuracy of the four with 42% while and the better goal conversion rate with 25%.Salah also leads the Liverpool way with assists, having been credited with two this season from 18 chances created. Gakpo is the more creative, having two chances converted from 21 created and Alexis Mac Allister has also had two chances converted from the nine that he has made for his teammates. The BossAfter a perfect first season in which Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions, Arne Slot has come under pressure in recent weeks from the media and, strangely, from Liverpool’s own supporters. The Reds won the league at a canter last season and many would have expected them to dominate this season. But a series of defeats have left question marks over the boss and some have already demanded his head on a plate, considering their summer outlay.Slot has presided over 73 matches, winning 48 and losing 15, giving him a win ratio of 66%, a ratio that many struggling teams would kill for.Last Time OutCity struggled to contain the eventual champions and goals by Salah (of course) and Dominik Szoboszlai secured the points for the Reds at the Etihad last February.
