Wow, that’s really sad. I’ll never understand why some people can’t just accept whatever is offered and be grateful for the gift while others struggle to take anything despite needing the help. A while back I began taking some people, I’m acquainted with through my work, to a local food pantry every Sunday as it’s my day off. I have a strict policy of not socializing with anyone I meet through my work, but I feel that this doesn’t cross that line. Unfortunately I did find that I had to set/ explain my boundaries on a few different occasions when they were suddenly texting me with subtle hints about needing money or asking me to take them someplace at that moment and that time was a pressing issue. Being put in those awkward situations is what keeps a lot of people from doing what those wonderful people do and sometimes it’s what makes others stop wanting to help. Luckily my people now understand that the time I give them is all that I have and honestly, all that I am willing to give. If it’s not enough, I understand and that’s ok because I can help someone else. But if my boundaries can be respected, I’ll keep my promise.
