Just 14 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Kamisu, Kamisu-shi, Ibaraki, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Thursday, November 13th, 2025, at 9:54 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 41. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Choshi (pop. 58,400) located 85 km from the epicenter, Kashima-shi (pop. 67,000) 87 km away, Kamisu (pop. 95,500) 88 km away, Hitachi (pop. 174,500) 92 km away, Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 94 km away, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,600) 94 km away, Inada (pop. 53,500) 97 km away, and Asahi (pop. 64,700) 99 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
