Dominik Szoboszlai believes it is up to him and his Liverpool teammates to get the best out of summer signing Florian Wirtz.Wirtz, 22, has endured a difficult start to life at Anfield since joining the Premier League champions from Bayer Leverkusen for a deal worth £116 million in June. After starting the opening four Premier League games of the season, the Germany international was benched for four of the Reds’ next seven fixtures in the competition.During that time, Wirtz has been deployed off the left-hand side, with Dominik Szoboszlai preferred in the No. 10 role. But despite Wirtz failing to score a goal or create an assist in the Premier League since his mega-money move, Szoboszlai believes it is down to him and the rest of his teammates to get the best out of the German at Anfield.“If I say we are not under pressure, it is weird,” Szoboszlai told TNT Sports last week. “We have time. We have to find the solution as a team.“He [Wirtz] can have a good game, Milos [Kerkez] can have a good game, everyone can have a good game – but if we don’t perform as a team, then it won’t help.”The Premier League might be proving a tough adaptation for Wirtz, but the Champions League has been a safe haven for the former Bayer Leverkusen ace this term.Wirtz has started all four of the Reds’ clashes in Europe this season, and last week produced his best performance for the club against Real Madrid. The 2024 Bundesliga winner was instrumental in the win against Los Blancos and should have had an assist after some brilliant work to send Szoboszlai one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois. After failing to add to his goal tally for the season, Szoboszlai insists that he still regards himself as a midfielder – not a right-back.“As I said many times, if the gaffer wants to put me as a right-back – because obviously Jeremie is injured now, Conor is able to play three games in seven days but also he was injured a couple of times, so maybe he doesn’t want to risk it or something and he’s going to put me there – no problem at all,” said the Hungary international.“But I’m a midfielder.”The 25-year-old has impressed while being used as a make-shift right-back by Arne Slot at times this season. However, with Conor Bradley back to full fitness and Jeremie Frimpong set to return after the international break, Liverpool are unlikely to require Szoboszlai to deputise in that position anytime soon.Although the Northern Irishman could force a change of plans as he is walking a suspension tightrope in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
