Waiting for an upgrade: Here are 5 improvements I want from the Galaxy S27

Wait 5 sec.

After consistently pushing the boundaries of smartphones over the past decade, Samsung has slowed the pace of hardware innovation and relied more on software improvements and optimizations in the recent past. With the Galaxy S26 series appearing to be just another iteration, it’s time to look a bit ahead and dream a little. As I wait to upgrade from my trusty old Galaxy S23 Ultra, here are five features and improvements I would like to see in the Galaxy S27 series.1. 50MP or better sensors across all rear cameras Samsung's 200MP primary cameras have been decent, but the company needs to improve the size and resolution of the other rear cameras. The telephoto cameras in particular need improvements. Similar to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is rumored to feature a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, which is a shame to see in 2026.It is time Samsung equipped all rear cameras with bigger and 50MP (or higher) resolution sensors, ensuring consistent quality across all focal lengths. Apple has already upgraded to 48MP sensors for all the rear cameras on the iPhone 17 series. Other smartphone brands like OPPO and Vivo have even used 200MP sensors for telephoto cameras.A 50MP telephoto camera would not only offer improved details but also allow a better in-sensor crop for hybrid zoom and better low-light performance through pixel binning.2. Square front camera sensor with OIS While the 12MP front camera on the Galaxy S25 is pretty good, it is no longer the industry benchmark. Apple switched to an innovative 18MP square format sensor for the front-facing camera on the iPhone 17 series. It allows users to click portrait or landscape orientation selfies and videos regardless of how they are holding their phone. This is the kind of convenience Samsung needs to bring to its high-end phones.Besides a square camera, Samsung should also equip the front-facing camera with OIS. That would allow the phone to capture better selfies even in low-light conditions. It would also reduce shakes and jitter, which is something many people (and even creators) would appreciate.3. Bigger batteries, not just better efficiencySamsung usually does an excellent job optimizing battery life through software and chipset efficiency, but there is no substitute for a larger physical battery. With brighter screens and powerful chipsets, the battery capacity needs to grow as well. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is rumoured to use the same 5,000mAh battery that likely can't match the endurance of 7,000mAh batteries used in Chinese rivals. The Galaxy S27 should ideally have a 4,500mAh battery, while the Galaxy S27+ and the Galaxy S27 Ultra should be powered by a 5,800-6,000mAh battery.4. Faster charging across the boardEver since the Galaxy Note 7's battery fiasco, Samsung has been extremely conservative with battery and charging speeds. However, charging technology has improved by leaps and bounds since then, and Samsung needs to step up. OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi offer 100W or faster wired charging.Samsung should bring 45W fast charging to the base Galaxy S27. The Galaxy S27+ and the Galaxy S27 Ultra should have more than 60W fast charging. This would allow the phones to top up their higher capacity batteries to 100% in an hour. With efficient cooling systems and adaptive charging algorithms, Samsung should be able to deliver both speed and safety.5. Satellite connectivityIt has been more than three years since Apple brought satellite-powered SOS system to iPhones, and Samsung still doesn't have a similar feature. Satellite connectivity can be extremely useful in emergency situations and save countless lives. Even though both Exynos and Snapdragon chips have the feature on the hardware level, Samsung hasn't utilized it yet.Samsung should consider bringing satellite-based calling, messaging, and navigation (maps) to the Galaxy S27. That would give adventurers and regular consumer an edge. The Galaxy S27 needs be more than just another annual refresh. It needs to strengthen Samsung's position and re-establish it as the smartphone leader. With Apple tightening its hardware-software integration and Chinese brands bringing incredible hardware, Samsung needs to deliver drastic improvements and go beyong AI and other marketing buzzwords. The post Waiting for an upgrade: Here are 5 improvements I want from the Galaxy S27 appeared first on SamMobile.
