Drake Maye silences doubters as freezing cold takes age horribly amid MVP-caliber season

Wait 5 sec.

The calendar says November, but it seems everyone’s come down with Maye Fever.Drake Maye has restored the glory to the franchise in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as the New England Patriots appear to be all the way back.Maye has the Patriots looking like one of the best teams in the entire leagueGettyThe second-year quarterback out of North Carolina is enjoying a breakout, MVP-caliber campaign and making a whole lot of people look silly.Through the first ten weeks of the season, Maye has been nothing short of spectacular, leading the Patriots to an 8‑2 record, tied for the best in the league. He has thrown for 2,555 yards, ranking third in the league, along with 19 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He’s completing an impressive 71.7% of his passes and averaging nearly 9 yards per attempt. After a rookie season that was mostly a roller‑coaster of struggles, Maye has unequivocally taken the leap this year. And in doing so, he’s turned plenty of doubters’ takes into outright freezing takes.Merril Hoge, former ESPN NFL analyst and former running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears, went on The Herd before the draft and expressed serious concerns about Maye’s accuracy.“He is completely erratic when it comes to throwing the football,” Hoge said.“It’s a big concern. Can you button those things up? Can you get a little better? Here’s what my ultimate belief is from playing in this league, coaching, studying this league for 40 years — you just don’t correct that. It actually is magnified when you get to the National Football League.“That’s when you become more erratic, and it’s on all throws. It’s short, intermediate, long.”Well, guess who broke Tom Brady’s franchise record for single-game completion percentage earlier this year?Could Maye win the MVP in only his second season?GettyPatriots fans have to be smiling from ear to ear at the leap Maye has takentalkSPORT reacts...Drake Maye has emerged as a top 3 QB in NFL right nowHow many quarterbacks are playing better than Maye right now?Matthew Stafford? Patrick Mahomes, maybe? If that’s the question we’re asking ourselves, which it is, as the calendar creeps toward mid-November, and those are the names being mentioned alongside Maye, then there’s not much else to say. Now, if you’re asking whether the Patriots have their next Tom Brady, that might be a bit too hyperbolic for now. But what if Maye wins the AFC East and makes a deep run in the postseason? It wouldn’t be too crazy to say he’s on a Brady-like path. No one is calling the 23-year-old the greatest football player ever, but with the way he’s playing in only his second year, at this age, there’s no doubt you can already call him one of the elite quarterbacks in the game today.Jack Savage, NFL WriterMaye did, completing 21 of 23 passes for an incredible 91.3% against the Tennessee Titans earlier this year.Hoge wasn’t the only one off the mark about Maye. ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller told talkSPORT in an exclusive interview that Maye’s game was filled with bad habits.“Maye is the one where I think he needs structure around him because he has some bad habits with his lower body,” Miller said.“He’s got some bad habits with his processing speed as well — that’s got to get a little better and a little faster.”Miller’s take wasn’t as harsh as Hoge’s or some of the others, as Maye was undoubtedly a raw prospect coming out of college. He’s learned, grown, and improved, exactly what elite players do.And he now has the Patriots in prime position to capture the franchise’s seventh Lombardi Trophy.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more
