Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain believes the “misconception” that he was an ‘injury-prone’ player has “haunted” him since tearing his ACL with Liverpool more than seven years ago.The 32-year-old was sidelined for nearly a year after sustaining a season-ending injury in the 5-2 win over Roma in the Champions League in April 2018.The England international, who was signed from Arsenal for £35 million at the start of that season, missed more than 50 games before making his return against Huddersfield in April 2019.But in a recent interview with former team-mate Ben Foster, Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted that devastating injury left him with the undeserved and unwanted tag of being ‘injury prone’. “The whole injury misconception thing has haunted me for years,” he told the Fozcast podcast.“When I did my ACL at Liverpool, that was in 2018. I can remember going into interviews in 2021 and people still asking me about my ACL.“With injuries, when you’re at a big club and you’ve got a bit of a profile, and you’re playing for England, maybe your injuries are a bit more high-profile, and everyone knows about them.“I always felt like whenever I got injured, it was always a bad one. I didn’t get many hamstring injuries or anything like that – it was always a knee that kept me out for a spell of time.“In a way, I look at mine, and they always seem to happen when I was flying. At that point [in 2018] I was really doing well, so when I got the injury it was a bigger story.“There’s been spells where I’ve not been playing well, and had I got injured then when I was out the team and I wasn’t starting at Liverpool, would people have noticed the fact I got injured as much?“The whole injury-prone thing, I’ve always struggled to get my head around that, because injury-prone in my head was lads that are unfortunate and always picking up hamstring and then calf injuries, and their body failing them in that way.“My injuries were always contact – I got smashed and I got injured, and it always seemed to be them that kept me out for a long spell.“I come back, and I get to that level, which I think shows you’re not an injury-prone player.“When you do a big knee [injury], other things start happening, and you have to adapt.”After making his return to action, the midfielder was used sparingly by Jurgen Klopp in the final weeks of the 2018/19 season as Liverpool remained in the hunt for both Premier League and Champions League. But Oxlade-Chamberlain was able to win his place back in the starting XI the following season – and made more than 40 appearances over the course of the campaign to help the Reds win a first Premier League title since 1990.Now though, more than five years on from that historic campaign, Oxlade-Chamberlain is looking for a return to a club in England after agreeing to terminate his contract at Besiktas in August. The midfielder, who spent two seasons in Turkey, is currently training at his former club Arsenal while he waits for a suitable offer to come along.“It’s different. It’s not a nice situation for any footballer to be in, but I’m fortunate enough that I’ve put myself into a situation to choose what’s best for me, and I’ve said no to things,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain.“There’s more in play now – family, children – I’m being a bit more selective. Ultimately, the whole thing is that I want to get back playing again as soon as possible.“There’s obviously stuff you can do to be proactive yourself, maybe even find opportunities or letting people know you’d be open to opportunities. Ultimately, it’s out of your control.“You’re sat waiting for a call, for a team to decide they need you and that you can bring value. It’s a lot of waiting around.”Oxlade-Chamberlain revealed he has rejected several offers from clubs in Europe since leaving Turkey.
