(Express File)Written by Shruti BediA day after Panjab University (PU) student representatives submitted a charter of demands, Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig Wednesday met members of the PU Bachao Morcha, following which the university announced the formation of a six-member committee to address the ongoing agitation. The meeting, held in the V-C’s office, saw student leaders press for written assurances on four key issues: withdrawal of FIRs against protesting students, a freeze on major administrative decisions until the Senate is reconstituted, rollback of new SOPs and the vetting panel, and ensuring reservation compliance in faculty recruitment. After hearing the delegation, Prof Vig announced a committee chaired by Prof Jasbir Singh, head of the Department of History, along with five senior faculty members. The panel has been authorised to review each of the demands and submit recommendations to the university administration. The V-C assured students that “all demands will be examined and fulfilled”, though she added that the process could take time because of procedural requirements. While students cautiously welcomed the move, they said it fell short of their core demand: the immediate announcement of Senate elections.According to those present, Prof Vig informed the delegation that the union Ministry of Education had taken over the matter and appointed two officers to oversee the process. University officials also told students that the Senate election schedule would likely be announced “within two to three days”.The assurance, however, did little to pacify the protesters who said the protest will continue until the election schedule is released. The issue of FIRs against students also dominated discussions. University officials clarified that the FIRs were registered not by the VC’s office but by Chief Security Officer Vikram Singh.Story continues below this adLater in the day, PU Bachao Morcha representatives met Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur to discuss the November 10 protest and future demonstrations. According to sources, the SSP urged students to maintain peace, inform authorities in advance, and prevent the participation of outsiders. The morcha leaders, however, said they would not seek prior police permission to hold protests, terming it their democratic right. They said a student coordination committee would be formed to ensure peaceful demonstrations.Even as semester exams begin on November 18, the tents outside the V-C’s office remain pitched.(The writer is an intern with The Indian Express)Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:panjab universityPunjab
