The winter chill has set in across the state, with the minimum temperature dipping lower than normal. Jalgaon remains the coldest place in the state at 9 °C and the only one with a single-digit reading. On November 10, this district in North Maharashtra had recorded the season’s first single-digit minimum temperature of 9.6 °Celsius. The weather office says that there is a likelihood of an isolated cold wave in North and North-East of Maharashtra in the coming days.“One of the causes for the chill is that the sky has been clear since the departure of the South West Monsoon. A cloudless sky allows the radiation of the sun, which warms the Earth’s surface during the day, to escape rapidly in the evenings and the night, which bring about a significant drop in temperature,” says Kashyapi. The Northerly winds, blowing in through the Western Himalayan Region, such as Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are carrying chill to many north and central Indian states, including Maharashtra. “The third cause of the feeling of more cold is the dry atmosphere that does not trap the moisture,” says Kashyapi. On the other hand, the western disturbance – an upper air cyclonic circulation –, which brings winter rain and snow to Kashmir, has been weakened and is expected to leave towards the east, thus increasing a likely chance of fall in night temperature.Dipanita Nath is interested in the climate crisis and sustainability.
