A high alert has been sounded in Punjab, Haryana while Himachal Pradesh issued an advisory Monday evening following a blast near the Red Fort in Delhi that claimed nine lives and left several injured.“In the wake of the blast in New Delhi, a red alert has been sounded across all districts in the state of Punjab,” said a Punjab police department spokesperson. Commissioners of police and Senior Superintendents of Police have been asked to remain alert, said the spokesperson.The police force has been deployed at sensitive and vulnerable spots.Checking of vehicles and suspicious people has been intensified, he added the spokesperson.Nine died and 20 people were injured in the blast that took place on a busy evening when the area was milling with people. The injured were taken to the LNJP hospital, a few kilometres away.Separately, Haryana DGP O P Singh, in a post in Hindi on X, said, “”High alert across Haryana in view of Delhi incident. People are requested to remain calm. If any suspicious person or unclaimed object is seen, inform ‘112’ (emergency helpline). All district magistrates were directed to keep a vigil in districts bordering Delhi.The Himachal Pradesh Police issued an advisory with several guidelines and appealed to people to remain alert and vigilant. The police have advised people to immediately call the nearest police station or dial the emergency number 112 in case they notice any suspicious objects, unattended bags or vehicles. People have also been advised not to panic, believe or spread rumours or unverified information on social media platforms. Also, people have been advised to stay alert in crowded or sensitive areas and fully cooperate with police during security checks.Story continues below this ad“There is no need to panic as the state police has strengthened surveillance and security arrangements in all districts, particularly in border and sensitive areas”, stated the police.Meanwhile, several political leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini condemned the incident.Mann, in a post on X, said, “We have received the tragic news of a bomb blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, in which several people have reportedly been killed and many seriously injured.“A high-level investigation should be conducted into this incident in the nation’s capital, and the perpetrators should be given the harshest possible punishment. We pray to God for the eternal peace of souls of those who lost their lives in this tragedy and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he said.Story continues below this adSaini, in a post on X, termed the blast painful and worrisome. “To those people who have lost their loved ones in this tragic accident, may God grant them the strength to endure this unbearable sorrow.“I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Saini said.Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda called it “heart-wrenching.” “The government must ensure a high-level thorough investigation into this matter, and the strictest possible action must be taken against those who perpetrated this heinous act,” Hooda, a Leader of Opposition in Haryana, said in a post on X.Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring dubbed the blast incident as sad and shocking. “My heart goes out to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones in this blast. While I pray for the safety of everyone, the police must probe it as a top priority and find out the reasons for the blast. I pray for strength and peace for them in this hour of unimaginable pain, and for the swift recovery of the injured. The entire nation stands firmly with the victims and their families in this moment of sorrow and solidarity,” he said.Former union minister and Akali MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, too, expressed shock over the blast incident and extended her sympathies to the bereaved families.
